Well, I was never able to figure this out.
Then I remembered Toad, something I used to use a few years ago.  That has code completion.

I'd still love to get Squirrel working, so please reply if anyone ever has any ideas.

Dang.  I just don't know where to head, now.

I like Squirrel, but all I really want is column name code completion.  Does anyone know a program that can do that?  I tried to find out if MS Mgmt Studio will, but have found nothing.

Here's something worth mentioning.  I had to use the sqljdbc4.jar instead of sqljdbc.jar because when I created a driver with sqljdbc.jar, the stack trace error said my version of Java (1.6) required that I use sqljdbc4.jar.  I don't know if that makes any difference.

Matt, that was helpful.  I'll have to verify with the DBA that those settings are implemented.

David,

In my experience SQL Server connection problems are nearly always caused by problems with the Server not allowing TCP/IP connections or Mixed Authentication. I created a short document to explain the setup because it comes of frequently enough.

The document is targeted at Jaspersoft's JasperServer customers. But it should apply equally well to you.

Please let me know if it's helpful.

Well, this is a whole world of details, isn't it?  It's good to make sure of these kindsof things.

Yes, I have been replacing all the items in Uppercase with their proper values when I have been testing the string.

I don’t if this may be the problem but I just noticed that you have MY_DB after  “sqlserver://”, you are putting your server name there correct and not the database?

Just a guess.  Other than that I’m not sure what the problem might be, sorry.

Yes, I appended the user and password vars to the query string in the "URL" box.  I see you are splitting up the string with the plus concatenation operator.  Mine is just all one string.

This is what I tried...

jdbc:sqlserver://MY_DB:1433;databaseName=DB_NAME;user=USERNAME;password=MYPASS

... with my username and pw in the fields as well.

I also tried with and without the domain on my username. If I do have to put in the domain, it is domain BACKSLASH username, right?

In the ALIAS dialog box:

Name:      Whatever you call that connection

Driver:     Microsoft MSSQL Server JDBC Driver

URL:        jdbc:sqlserver:// SQLSVR:1433;" +    "databaseName=DBNAME;user=uname;password=pw

User Name:             uname

Password:              pw

Please note the user and password on the URL as well as the syntax used in the URL.  Not just what is in the User Name and Password fields

I am assuming you appended the user info there.  Is that correct?

Thanks, but no dice... yet.  I tried different variations with and without the domain, but nothing worked.

I tried it with and without also putting my user info in the separate boxes for it.  Do you also put your username and pw in the boxes as well?

I think you also need the username and password. That is what I had to do.

Thanks Rob. I downloaded the JAR from Microsoft.

Here's my connection string....

jdbc:sqlserver://DB_SERVER_NAME:1433;database=MY_DATABASE

I'm getting a "login failed" error.  I've tried just my username, domain\usernam, domain/username, but nothing. I can get in through MS SQL Management Studio, but I have to specify the database name, or it won't let me in.

I know my server name and database name are right.
I've tried it with and without the port number.

Any clue anyone?

It's likely that the JDBC-ODBC bridge driver doesn't provide the
column information needed to populate the code-completion.  You should
get the latest JDBC driver (.jar file) that is available for your
database from your database vendor, copy that driver into
<SQUIRREL_HOME>/lib and update your alias to use the new driver
definition.
You will most likely need to change the JDBC URL to work with the JDBC driver.
