Ashutosh,

perhaps you post the entry in the tnsnames.ora you try to connect to with sqlplus? What version of Oracle are you using. Is the server running on the same machine as SQuirreL does?

For example I use "jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:xe" for connecting to my local installation of Oracle 10g Express Edition, that implements the oracle-service "xe"
by default.

Ashutosh,

While it is possible - I believe - to configure an Oracle type2 JDBC
driver to use the locally installed SQL*Net software and
configuration, your best bet would be to use a type 4 driver instead
(ojdbc14.jar).  This jar can be found on the server in
$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib folder.  Copy it into your SQuirreL lib folder,
restart SQuirreL and then create an alias with JDBC URL like:

jdbc:oracle:thin:@<servername>:<port>:<orasid>
