Initially I was able to install Squirrel SQL onto my Linux box without any problems. And I had used it quite a few times. Recently I went to start up Squirrel, and I got this message about a VM problem, but I havent changed the VM package at all. I attempted to do a fresh install, and that version reported the same problem.

Attached is the log report.

The JVM that is in use according to the report is /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_06/bin/java (jdk1.5.0_06). The JIT compiler apparently referenced memory it did not own (SIGSEGV) when it was trying to compile :

    net.n3.nanoxml.StdXMLParser.processElement(Ljava/lang/String;Ljava/util/Properties;)

which is a small XML library that we use.

Here is a thread that talks about a work-around for this Java bug:

    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=696753&messageID=4053134

    (-XX:CompileCommand=exclude,net/n3/nanoxml/StdXMLParser,processElement)

Here is another java forum thread apparently for running Lucene (Java search engine) and users experienced the same bug:

    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=691320&tstart=1

Perhaps you could try getting the latest version of 1.5 (which appears to be update 15, or 1.5.0_15) ?
