Completed the OragleXE (10.2.0 - 32bit) client install. I installed
SQL Tools 1.6. and the program cannot find my tnsnames.ora.
After I copied tnsnames.ora to SQL Tools folder it find tnsnames.ora
When connection with tnsnames.ora using -
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
When direct connection -
ORA-06413: Connection not open.
I've verified connectivity to my databases via SQLPlus.
I tried some previous SQL Tools version, their behavior is similar
OS - Windows7

Discussion

  • I don't think it is sqltools bug.

Most likely any other 3d party tool will have the same problem on your PC. However TOAD might work because it uses unconventional way to initialize oracle client.

I suggest to add TNS_ADMIN variable to your environment to resolve this problem

  • Actually my first post was how to resolve the problem with tnsnames.ora

If you cannot connect then check if you have orcale listener configured and running

    then try tnsping <YOUR DB>

sql*plus might use BEQ protocol that is not available for sqltools by default but it will work if you add a corresponding entry in tnsnames.ora explicitly

I had a similar problem when application was installed in "Program files (x86)" directory. Try to install sqltools in other location (without parentheses in path - e.g. "Program files").

ratse, thanks. I removed SQL Tools from "Program files (x86)" to another directory. And now all OK.
