I've tried putting the default_configuration.ini file
in many different locations since the instructions in
the faq are not clear enough.

The logfiles are empty (first time install) apart from
one or two innocuous messages such as :

"Loading database... User interface url is
http://localhost:8880/"

I've tried adding an extra backslash to the end of the
folder path (for each copy of the ini file).

I've watched for the recreation of the data folder;
which only happens in the default location.

You're reading a question in the FAQ that only applies to
the Outlook plugin (it's in the Outlook plug-in section).
None of it applies to the proxy, and no
"default_configuration.ini" file will be used at any point.

You have two options if you want to change where the data is
    stored:

    1. just go into the configuration page on the web
interface (some of the options are on the advanced page) and
    change the ones you want.

    2. if the paths to the various items (the two databases
and the cache directories) are relative ("folder/folder",
not "drive:/folder/folder") then they will be relative to
the location of the configuration file (the
bayescustomize.ini file, probably). So you can move this
and they'll move too. To get SpamBayes to recognise the
location of the moved bayescustomize.ini file, set the
environment variable "BAYESCUSTOMIZE" to the location of the
    file.
