Name: cis-regulatory module
SO accession: SO:0000727
def: A regulatory region where transcription factor binding sites clustered to regulate various aspects of transcription activities. "CRMs can be located a few kb to hundred kb upstream of the basal promoter, in the coding sequence, within introns, or in the downstream 3'UTR sequences, as well as on different chromosome...". A single gene can be regulated by multiple CRMs to give precise control of its spatial and temporal expression. CRMs function as nodes in large, intertwined regulatory network.
synonyms: CRM, cis regulatory module, TF module, transcription factor module
children: silencer, locus control region, enhancer, promoters, insulators

    Hey Mei Yee
I know we talked about this a long time ago, but it is not clear from this comment if you think that CRM and transcriptional cis regulatory region should be merged. DO you want the child terms to be kinds of CRM or parts of CRM?

    Hi Karen,

I think we want to merge CRM and transcriptional cis regulatory region
because they overlap with each other. The child terms are more
appropriately to be part_of CRM because they are subregion of CRM.
