I ran the long test and got the results which contained the following line: 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 001 001 063 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 1276 ......... SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1 Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 10% 7597 0x03af5f56 # 2 Short offline Completed: read failure 60% 7597 0x03af5f56 # 3 Short offline Completed: read failure 60% 7597 0x03af5f56 any idea what it means? john |

Hold the fort on the first point of my last post have just run the long test and it has come back with a different LBA this time = 0x03b04f57 so I presume that the first one is sorted in some way. - just another 343 to go:-) but has any one any idea if there's a web site that will do these hex conversion for me? john On 1 Apr 2005, at 17:18, john m wrote: > > ... > Num Test_Description Status Remaining > LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error > # 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 10% 7668 > 0x03af5f56 > # 2 Extended offline Completed: read failure 10% 7603 > 0x03af5f56 > # 3 Extended offline Completed: read failure 10% 7597 > 0x03af5f56 > # 4 Short offline Completed: read failure 60% 7597 > 0x03af5f56 > # 5 Short offline Completed: read failure 60% 7597 > 0x03af5f56 > > The only difference is that webmin now reports 343 errors on the disk > and before it only reported 325 > The file across the first bad block is an out of date linux source > file. cheers for the suggestions I posted to another forum and came up with: perl -e 'printf('%d',0x0abc);' to add to the collection. thanks john On 2 Apr 2005, at 16:52, Bruce Allen wrote: >> Why not use your calculator ? :) >> Either a real scientific calculator or your computer program equalent >> will do. > > Under Linux I use bc: |

Hi anyone have been following the help file at http:// smartmontools.sourceforge.net/BadBlockHowTo.txt and got as far as the debugfs but it seems unable to give me the inode number, and hence the file name that is on the bad block. Have been through it once so far today and it worked ok. But now onto the next error, and it I seem to be stuck. any ideas? /sbin/debugfs debugfs 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) debugfs: open /dev/hda2 debugfs: icheck 7709681 icheck: Can't read next inode while doing inode scan john |

Probably the only good solution is to scrub the disk by writing the entire surface using dd. This will of course wipe out any data on it. But after this, if you notice more sectors failing, it probably means that the disk's days are numbered. Start thinking about the rubbish bin.... Cheers, Bruce |
