Hello, I'm running smartmontools with good results. All tests pass, the drive appears to be fine.
This was a new drive to replace a laptop drive that smartmontools was reporting smart failures.
This drive makes an odd single click noise about every 5 minutes. It's as if it is parking the heads into a power saving mode. I notice it at night when I am only browsing the web. But they never park I guess, as 5 minutes later, the noise happens again.
I can understand why it would continue to go in and out if some power save mode. The click is obnoxious because it sounds like a click that means drive failure is eminent. I don't believe that to be the case.
Does anyone know what this is and if it can be turned off?
Every test I run, even certifying the drive, which took 1.5 days, with SoftRAID, passes fine. I think this is normal, but a feature I would like to try to turn off. I read an article which I can no longer find that showed this was causing drive wear at at unreasonable rate.
I am on a Mac so hdparm is not available to me unless I figure out a good Linux boot CD.
