Hi, I have an old system that's running smartd/smartctl 5.38 and configured with a daily short test. Currently I have a script setup to gather smartctl -l error /dev/sda smartctl -A /dev/sda smartctl -H /dev/sda every 30 seconds and analyse the result to detect any issue. Is this too frequent? Would gathering those results at this frequency impact the harddisk performance badly or may have adverse effect to the drive? If yes, is there any reasonable frequency? I do want to get notified when problem gets detected the earliest before it's too late. Thanks, --Chris |

Having seen Oracle Database Servers dying because someone thought it is a good idea to exercise the smart status of all 60 disks every 5 Minutes, I'd say that based on my experience something bigger than 6 hours and smaller than 2 Days is a good frequency for checking a drives health.
