My company is intending to use smartmontools (smartctl) to monitor hard disks. I have asked a colleague (working at a different location) to run a series of tests using smartctl version 5.38. He is seeing something I have not seen when testing any of my disks, namely, on running a short self-test on a SATA , he gets :- smartctl --test=short C: "Execute SMART Short self-test routine immediately in off-line mode failed: Function not implemented." SMART is enabled via "smartctl --smart=on C:" Is this a common occurrence? More importantly, where can I find out about all kinds of responses so that my tests can cater for all kinds of disks in all circumstances (OK, maybe that's too much to ask)? Thanks............Martin This e-mail may be confidential and privileged. Do not open it if you are in any doubt that you are the intended recipient. Sorry about this, but I think I've found the solution to this question. Apparently you need to run with ADMIN rights.........Martin >>> Martin Craigen 04/06/2010 16:10 >>> My company is intending to use smartmontools (smartctl) to monitor hard disks.
