Dear members of this mailing-list, I recently (i.e. one week ago) bought myself some HD204UI hdds - unaware of the fact that those were the models affected by the known firmware bug. Since I couldn't find any info like "all models manufactured after xyz are bug-free" I contacted Samsung support, asking for that specific info. And I just got a response: all drives manufactured on/after December 2010 come with the patched firmware. So here, is this info FYI. Have a good day & best regards, René |

The problem remains that the firmware, patched or otherwise, still has the same version number, as I understand it. -- 1AQ10001. FWIW, my drive (below) has a manufacturing date of Dec 2010. So perhaps the '0001' is in fact the mod to '1AQ1' that will appear as the firmware string in smartctrl. -- Roy Zider >From Silicon Image Sil 3512 SATARaid Controller Device Info panel: Firmware; 1AQ1 0001 Serial No: S2H7JD1B109524 (S2H7 JD1B 109524) -----Original Message----- From: René de Hesselle [mailto:deh...@gm...] Sent: Wednesday, April 13, 2011 02:15 To: sma...@li... Do all of your HD204UI still report "1AQ10001" as the firmware version? Thanks, Christian |

Yes, sadly they all report "1AQ10001" (date of manufacture: March 2011), so I get the accompanying warnings from smartd. (I can live with that - I do know now that everyting's fine.) And Samsung gently ignored my comment about "what genius decided to keep the old version number"... ;-) The only general advice I've got is to use Samsung's warranty check http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/warranty.html to see when the warranty ends and calculate backwards in order to get a raw estimate about the date of manufacture. In case of doubt, contact them directly through their contact form - I got my response within 24 hours (German support). You can disable the warning: Simply copy the F4 EG from drivedb.h to the local drive database (e.g. /etc/smart_drivedb.h) and replace the warning text by an empty string: { "SAMSUNG SpinPoint F4 EG (AFT) [fixed]", "SAMSUNG HD(155|204)UI", "", "", "" } > And Samsung gently ignored my comment about "what genius decided to > keep the old version > number"... ;-) This is as expected ;-) > The only general advice I've got is to use Samsung's warranty check > http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/warranty.html > to see when the warranty ends and calculate backwards in order to get > a raw estimate > about the date of manufacture.
