One of my hard drives is not showing up on the desktop. I ran MacHelpMate
Utility Program for SMART drives. It gave me this message
"For information about adding a drive to the database see the FAQ on the
smartmontools home page: http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ "
I went to the site and not sure FAQ is there or not. Help . . . how do I
add my Hard drive back onto the data base?
I have PowerBook G4/800 DVI (Titanium) MAC OSX vers 10.3.9 Panther PowerPC

There are a few separate issues here. The device database for smartmontools
has nothing to do with your operating systems ability to show the drive on
the desktop. You have to consult OSX documentation for troubleshooting
problems with external drives.
What the message means is, that the version of smartmontools that comes with
your version of OSX doesn't have a database entry for your drive. This doesn't
mean that smartmontools won't work with unrecognized drives that are
connected to a compatible bus (see below). It just means that smartmontools
can't guarantee that it will display correct data, since it doesn't know if
the drive in question has firmware bugs that need workarounds.
The question if your drive is or is not in the latest smartmontools database I
leave to the actual developers.

To my knowledge no external drive connected through USB can be analyzed
with smartmontools, because the USB blockdevice emulation layers don't
pass through the extended commands required for SMART operations.
