Hi all,

I'm using smartmontools-5.32 on cygwin-1.5.12 on win2000. I'm usin= g bash shell in the cygwin. After I run smartd, then I try to quit cygwin b= y "exit" command, I'm unable to exit out of cygwin. In other words, wh= enever smartd is running, I'm not able to exit out of the cygwin/bash windo= w. So, I forcibly kill the cygwin/bash window which kills the smartd also. = smartd is a daemon; once it is put into to the background as a daemon, why = should it get killed when I try to exit cygwin?

So, the two questions I'm asking are:

1) When smartd is running (which was started thro' cygwin), why I'm unab= le to exit cygwin?

2) When I focribly exit cygwin, why it kills smartd also?

3) Why this doesn't get logged? (Normally all the log stuff related to s= martd in cygwin is logged in the event log in windows).

I've just given below a screen capture on the cygwin.

------------------------------------------------------------------------= ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= --------

Administrator@IND-suresh ~
$ smartd

Administrator@IND-suresh ~
$ ps -ef
UID&n= bsp; PID PPID TTY &nbs= p; STIME COMMAND
Administ 1568 = 1 con 14:31:46 /usr/bin/bash
Administ &nbs= p; 2244 1 ? 14:31:49 = /usr/sbin/smartd
Administ 1060 1568 = con 14:31:53 /usr/bin/ps

Administrator@IND-suresh ~
$ exit
logout

_

------------------------------------------------------------------------= ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= -------

The "_" below the logout message, is the cursor; the cygwin window just = hangs at this point; When I forcibly kill it by clicking the close button i= con on the top right corner of the cygwin window, Win2000 pops up a message= box, saying the operation may need more time to to complete. But the point= s is, I've waited for many, many minutes and it never gets killed ie. I'm n= ever able to exit out of cygwin. This happens only when smartd is running a= nd not with any other commands.

At the base, I have win2000. Above that , cygwin. Bash is the shell on t= he cygwin. And smartd is invoked from bash. So, there are 4 layers, win2000= , cywin, bash, smartd. Out of these, which is responsible for this problem?= I don't know....

Has anyone experienced similar problem when running smartd in cygwin?

Experts... I need help.

thanks

suresh

--=20
___________________________________________________________
Sign-up f= or Ads Free at Mail.com
<a href=3D"http://mail01.mail.com/scripts/payment/adtracking.cgi?bannercode= =3Dadsfreejump01" target=3D"_blank">http://www.mail.com/?sr=3Dsignup
|
