Quoting Guido Guenther <ag...@si...>: > This is a patch specific to the debian kernels. Does SMART work for you > nevertheless? It should. You're attachments are all empty, btw. Thanks very much for your reply. Yes SMART does work fine. Do you mean that one of the debian kernel patches causes this error? If you could give me any more details (perhaps even the name of patch that is responsible) I will take this up with the Debian kernel maintainers. Thanks again, Rupert |

Thanks for the reply. Quoting Bruce Allen <ba...@gr...>: > Rupert, I think this has been fixed in the upcoming release. Doug, is > this fixed by the SG_IO changeover? Or am I missing the point? Is this a new release of smartmontools or of the Debian kernel? From what (little) I understood from the Debain kernel patches that cause these warnings they are triggered by the unusual SCSI commands that smartmontools sends to the drives and hence would probably not be helped by a smartmontools upgrade. Someone decided to put in a kernel message the first time a SCSI command opcode is encountered that is not in its list (of known opcodes). Note that only the first use of the unknown opcode causes this message (until the kernel is restarted). Opcode 0x4d is LOG SENSE which is very important for SCSI SMART but not much else. In lk 2.6.12-rc2 LOG SENSE is a recognised command but I know that hasn't been the case in earlier lk 2.6 kernels. So the warning is harmless and will go away. Recently I added a "READ DEFECT LIST" command. As it is "unknown" according to the kernel command list expect to see "scsi: unknown opcode 0x37" soon :-( Doug Gilbert "Against stupidity, even the gods fight in vain" > <included FYI> > >>On Wed, 30 Mar 2005, Rupert Hair wrote: >> >> >>>Hi, >>> >>>I have just installed the Debain smartmontools package on a new Dell >> >>Poweredge >> >>>server (more details in the attachments) and it seems that every time >> >>smartd or >> >>>smartctl are run the kernel spits out 'kernel: scsi: unknown opcode 0x4d'. >> >>The >> >>>machine seems to be stable so I presume these are just warnings. >>> >>>The kernel is Debian's 2.6.8-2-686 and I have attached various other things >> >>I >> >>>thought might be useful but please let me know if you need more details. >>> >>>Thanks, >>> >>>Rupert > > |

It's the scsi-ioctl.dpatch in the Debian kernels. I reassigned the bug a while ago there, got no reply so far. Maybe you can take this up again? Would be great! Cheers, -- Guido |
