Hi, I'm the packager of Smartmontools at MandrakeSoft and I don't understand why you consider mandrake as unsupported whereas it works and regulary released. 5.1.22 has been built this morning :) --=20 Erwan Velu Linux Cluster Distribution Project Manager MandrakeSoft 43 rue d'aboukir 75002 Paris Phone Number : +33 (0) 1 40 41 17 94 Fax Number : +33 (0) 1 40 41 92 00 Web site : http://www.mandrakesoft.com OpenPGP key : http://www.mandrakesecure.net/cks/=20 |

Hi Scott, > Q1: Is there a command line to create a separate log (with rotations) > for SMART messages? (Separate from "/var/log/messages" perhaps: > "SMARTlog.2" etc.) It's a good question - but I don't know the answer. This may be possible. You need to read: man syslogd man syslog.conf man logwatch > Q2: If not, is that planned for future releases? Not currently. I think you can do this with existing tools like logwatch. Bruce |

First of all, thank you for putting smartd in the universe. I discovered it as a series of lines in /var/log/messages after my systems consultant upgraded my servers to RedHat 9. At first I wanted to turn it off, but 2 seconds later decided that the information had value, even if it made a lot of entries on /var/log/messages. So: Q1: Is there a command line to create a separate log (with rotations) for SMART messages? (Separate from "/var/log/messages" perhaps: "SMARTlog.2" etc.) Q2: If not, is that planned for future releases? All the best, Scott PS While I make my living supporting Windows machines, I'm still pretty dangerous around Linux boxes. If my question reads as clueless, that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. _________________________________________________________________ You can do anything, but you can't do everything. |

I've updated the smartmontools web page, to read as follows: Smartmontools should work correctly with SATA drives under both linux 2.4 and 2.6 kernels, if you use the standard IDE drivers in drivers/ide. If you use the new libata drivers, it won't work correctly because libata doesn't yet support the needed ATA-passthrough ioctl() calls. Jeff Garzik, the libata developer, says that this support will be added in the future. When this happens, we'll add support to smartmontools for a new SATA/libata device type '-d sata'. Cheers, Bruce On Wed, 22 Oct 2003, Jon Smirl wrote: > Originally the 2.6 kernel was treating SATA drives like IDE ones and using the > IDE driver. smartd worked with this. Smartmontools 5.22 has been released at: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=64297 This release of smartmontools contains (experimental) support for Solaris (SCSI devices only). For other details please see the release notes and change log at the URL above. Bruce Allen |

Jon, Please keep CCing the smartmontools-support list in your replies, so that we have a record there. Could you please try an experiment? Try accessing the device as you are doing, but use -d ata to tell smartmontools that it's an ATA device: smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda to access the disk that used to be /dev/hde, for example. If this works, the corresponding smartd.conf entry would also have -d ata for /dev/sda. Please try this with a current smartmontools release, not an old release, since I think at least at one point something was broken and you couldn't over-ride the device type like this. Good evening, I was looking at one of the hard drives in my dekstop, /dev/hda and didn't see any temperature in the attributes. I ran the command 'smartctl -A /dev/hda' and here's what popped out. But I'd like to hear back from Doug if my "scsi hanging USB solution" looks OK to him, and from you to know if it's OK for freebsd. Also, I think we'll have Solaris SCSI support in the 5.22 release - I already have a preliminary version in hand but it needs a tiny bit more work. Cheers, Bruce |

Is this hardware or software RAID? If it's software RAID, then smartctl/smartd shoudl work fine. If it's hardware RAID, then the only supported controller is the 3ware escalade series. If you are using a 3ware RAID controller, and are having problems with smartmontools , please let us know. Bruce |

All, My submission to the FreeBSD Ports team has been accepted and committed. Smartmontools is now a member of the FreeBSD Ports collection, as 'sysutils/smartmontools' Currently, this is for version 5.21. I plan on submitting regular updates to the Ports collection as future releases are made. Ed -- Eduard Martinescu <mar...@ro...> |

Hello, I am using smartmontools for monitoring couple of desktop/small server ATA HHDs. Smartctl does it's job. But yesterday I've noticed some problems with RAID array on one of production servers I'm taking care of. And there goes a question - do you know about any problems using smartctl with such kind of hardware? Or - perhaps you have information from other users, that such combination works fine? TIA for any information. Greetings, -- Jakub Filipowicz, jfi...@ax... "My name is Filipowicz. James Filipowicz." |

Try downloading the latest code from CVS. It should build, making use of the os_generic.[hc] files. Give it a try, and let us know if it doesn't compile. However, although it will build, it still needs to be ported. Those files just contain empty stubs. Originally the 2.6 kernel was treating SATA drives like IDE ones and using the IDE driver. smartd worked with this. Now the kernel has been reworked (as of today) to handle SATA drives with the SCSI driver (this is being done to 2.4 too). I can't figure out how to make smartd work with the new driver. Backstory: At my company we have a pair of Compaq Armada V300's, and a while back we bought a pair of 20GB Fuji hard drives to replace the much-smaller stock drives. I only ever upgraded my laptop, as the user of the other never needed it. The first drive has been in regular use about 3 years now. The second drive has remained sealed in it's factory box from Fuji, and sat in a controlled environment. I decided to do a 100% re-install, including moving from RedHat Linux to Gentoo Linux, so I used the second drive to do this on so that I'd have the old drive in an emergency. I started my move the week before last, and the new drive has been incontinuous use (without problems) since the week before last. Last night I took the laptop home, only the second time this drive has ever been powered on. The Compaq BIOS now complains about the SMART report showing the drive as failing. I came across smartmontools, and installed via the Gentoo portage system. The drive certainly does not behave as if it's failing. The "invalid SMART checksum" obviously says that the SMART data got scrambled somehow, so perhaps the failure message for the Seek_Time_Performance is at error? So, here is the info so that (a) this model can be added to the database (note that the drive stores attribute #9 in seconds), and (b) demonstrate both the checksum error (which I found no mention of in this mailing list's archives), and a failing attribute #8. Unfortunately, I catch a flight in an hour and a half, so I'm stuck with this drive until I can get back and back it up. I'm betting it will survive, though, as I'm guessing the SMART facility itself is what's wrong on this drive, rather than the drive itself, given the checksum error. I'm open for suggestions. The logs at the end are the tests I tried to run after seeing this. Nothing would ever complete, even specifying -T permissive. Thanks, Bradley Hartin - bh...@st... Hi Micah, > Is it safe to run tests on devices behind 3ware controllers? I want to > run smartctl -t long -d 3ware,0 /dev/sda (and 3ware,1 /dev/sda). All I can tell you for sure is: (1) I've done it lots of times. It's never caused trouble. (2) We've never gotten an angry email from a user saying "this broke my box." (3) If you are talking about a mission-critical system (eg, you will lose your job if it fails, somewill will be injured, etc) then please try it first on a test system. > I ask because I've already gotten bit by the IBM DEATHstar Smart > firmware bug on another system, and I am paranoid about doing this > unless it is absolutely safe. Is it safe to run tests on devices behind 3ware controllers? I want to run smartctl -t long -d 3ware,0 /dev/sda (and 3ware,1 /dev/sda). I ask because I've already gotten bit by the IBM DEATHstar Smart firmware bug on another system, and I am paranoid about doing this unless it is absolutely safe. I should also mention that 3ware,2 is a DEATHstar device (that is why I didn't ask if it was safe above). Also, I asked previously about what the best way is to get a device into the smart database. You responded saying send in a smartctl -a with some -v options tweaked so they are right... I haven't done that because I was a little confused about how I can tweak the -v values so that I know they are right... Is there a good method for doing this? All disks are Ultra320 but I have Adaptec 39160D and disks are running Ultra160 mode. As well testing PC is pretty poor (old Intel Celeron 433MHz with 256Mb of memory). Later I will connect RAID to server station with Adaptec 39320D and could tell more. now hdparm gives # hdparm -t /dev/sdg /dev/sdg: Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.04 seconds = 31.37 MB/sec for short comparison on the other channel old IBM DDRS-34560 gives # hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 5.10 seconds = 12.55 MB/sec Later, if need, I could say more test info about Ultra320 mode. But behind this we had problems, two new Atlas 15k disks just crushed with many bad blocks after some weeks of hard using. It was this summer, then we lost our RAID. Now we got by warranty two new and I am testing it. # badblocks -b 4096 -s -w -c 512 /dev/sd?1 gave no error :) Ivan --------- Ivan Degtyarenko ----------- im...@fy... ---------- Laboratory of Physics Helsinki University of Technology tel +358-9-451 3103 P.O.Box 1100 fax +358-9-451 3116 02015 Espoo, Finland ---------------------------------- http://www.fyslab.hut.fi/ ------ |

Ivan, Maxtor is wrong (or at least inconsistent)! During production they should put a valid production date in the disk firmware (about the same time as they give it a unique serial number). Smartmontools is simply outputting the contents of log page 0xe ("start stop cycle counter" page). Maxtor's product manual for the Atlas 10k IV says to "contact your Maxtor applications engineer" for more information about the contents of log sense pages (their site doesn't have a product manual for the Atlas 15k yet). Contacting Maxtor shouldn't be necessary since that page is defined in the relevant standard (www.t10.org SPC document). > full output: > > ------------------------------------------- > # smartctl -a /dev/sdb1 > > smartctl version 5.20 Copyright (C) 2002-3 Bruce Allen > Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ > > Device: MAXTOR ATLAS15K_73SCA Version: DT60 > Serial number: C80356MK > Device type: disk > Local Time is: Thu Oct 9 19:05:50 2003 EEST > Device supports SMART and is Enabled > Temperature Warning Enabled > SMART Health Status: OK > Current Drive Temperature: 36 C > Manufactured in week 00 of year 2000 > Current start stop count: 182 times > Recommended start stop count: 4294967295 times Perhaps I should change that to "Recommended maximum ...". Anyway the number is crazy and is 0xffffffff in hex. The standard gives them no latitude to do that. > Error counter log: > Errors Corrected Total Total Correction Gigabytes > Total > delay: [rereads/ errors algorithm processed > uncorrected > minor | major rewrites] corrected invocations [10^9 > bytes] errors > read: 349618 0 0 0 0 772.206 > 0 > write: 0 0 0 0 0 668.155 > 0 > > Non-medium error count: 4 > No self-tests have been logged > Long (extended) Self Test duration: 2056 seconds [34.3 minutes] Perhaps you should do a self test (e.g. 'smartctl -t short /dev/sdf') to see if the result turns up after the second last line. Anyway, how does the Atlas 15k perform? Doug Gilbert |

Well, they're still out of sync, now for almost 55h. And it seems something screwed the projects. Some days ago I did an update of my icewm sources, and now I got old files, like if they used a backup. This is my last e-mail about it. I'll make another as soon as they get it fixed and I know how long the new delays are. Don't forget. If you want the 5.21 release, get the tarballs. On Wed, 15 Oct 2003, Fr=E9d=E9ric L. W.
