hello all i'm seeing some weirdness with smartctl and the Seagate Momentus XT on one of my clients Macs. on all other disks i've seen running "smartctl -a disk<num>" is enough to print the S.M.A.R.T. attributes. however on this disk this would *sometimes* just result in (*): > SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. > SMART support is: Disabled > > SMART Disabled. Use option -s with argument 'on' to enable it. in these cases its necessary to use "-s on" to get the other attribute. sometimes the SMART support is already enabled and the parameter is not necessary. now, the question is, why is this behavior like this on this disk, and on every other disk i've seen its *never* necessary to use "-s on" to get the attributes (under Mac OS X). is this some bug in smartctl (i'm using a svn snapshot from late april 2012)? or the disk? thanks, julian (*) p.s. full output: === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: ST750LX003-1AC154 Serial Number: W2003E4Y LU WWN Device Id: 5 000c50 04512e1bd Firmware Version: SM12 User Capacity: 750,156,374,016 bytes [750 GB] Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: ATA-8-ACS revision 4 Local Time is: Wed May 2 11:07:28 2012 EDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
