[smartmontools-support] Getting started with checking disk health

Hi, I'm interested in checking to see if my disk has suffered any excessive bit rot (and generally how healthy my disk is), but I'm not sure what to make of the transcript below, where I'm running three smartctl commands (the third one I ran at least 90 minutes after the second one). For instance, it says at the bottom that the short tests were passed, but why are they short test results, when I requested a long test? And what are all those numbers it displays before those final lines? For the record (i.e., to encourage better documentation): I looked at some tutorials, but they either described SMART/smartmontools in an overview, or they described how to run it, but never how to interpret the results.
