Incidentally, I've recently been having stability problems with this arrangement under Linux, although it's not clear whether this is a driver or firmware bug.. If I do: while true ; do dd if=/dev/zero of=empty count=1M ; sync ; rm empty ; sync ; done and: while true ; do smartctl -a /dev/sg1 > /dev/null || echo failed && echo -n . ; done at the same time then about 10% of the smartctl commands fail, and the MPT driver occasionally resets the controller and/or particular drives.
