Okay everyone sorry about this stupid question but here goes: I have an IBM travel star hard drive.  (Model number IC25N030ATCS04-0), my BIOS tells me that SMART is enabled.  But when I use the smartctl command in the command prompt it says this:

C:\>smartctl -a /dev/hda -T verypermissive

smartctl version 5.33 [i386-pc-mingw32] Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce Allen

Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

\\.\PhysicalDrive0: SMART_GET_VERSION failed, Error=50

If this is a SCSI disk, try "scsi<adapter><id>".

Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device)

SMART is only available in ATA Version 3 Revision 3 or greater.

We will try to proceed in spite of this.

SMART support is: Ambiguous - ATA IDENTIFY DEVICE words 82-83 don't show if SMAR

T supported.

Checking for SMART support by trying SMART ENABLE command.

Error SMART Enable failed: Input/output error

SMART ENABLE failed - this establishes that this device lacks

SMART functionality.

T is enabled.

Checking to be sure by trying SMART RETURN STATUS command.

SMART support is: Unavailable

And when I try to tell it to enable SMART it says this:

C:\>smartctl -s on /dev/hda -T verypermissive
