It isn't easy but you should be able to do almost everything you require....
There are several variables which refer to the base URL - you should stick
"/patent/" in them.... Which ones they are I forget exactly..... perhaps
you could buy the O'Reilly slash book :-)
However most of the admin programs in bender 2.0.0 at least assume they are
in the root directory and ignore these variables resulting in things like
admin.pl, users.pl, and so on assuming they are in the root directory. I
fixed this by redirecting them in the apache web server so that if it saw
/admin.pl then it would rewrite this as /mydir/admin.pl

Note that my sites are *still* on Bender 2.0.0 with the security patch
applied - not 2.2.5
