May I ask where? If you are UK based then we might be able to help you out. > I'd like to get some general comments from the general mailing list > about: > > - - Minimum hardware requirements This was discussed several times quite recently. A PC running Linux with at least a Gb hard disk and at least 256Mb memory, though 128 might work ok for a low usage site, and far more is preferred. CPU speed is not really a bottleneck as far as I know. > - - Quirks or other idosyncracries that I need to be aware of (other > than what's in TFM) It's written in perl - you need to be comfortable installing perl modules. Making that easier is really outside of the slashcode developers control. perl modules are being updated all the time and so it is difficult to produce an idiot proof installation. The major quirk is that slash sometimes pretends to be a fully blown portal package, but it isn't. It provides the same functionality as slashdot.org and if that is what you want then slashcode is the tool to do it. > - - Good hosting providers that would support slash There is a pretty complete list of hosting providers on the slashcode.com website. Go for it. > Also, barring the access_log and error_log files that apache has, > what logging does slashd have when it comes to logging IP Addresses > and such? It runs through Apache web server so you get whatever you configure Apache to log. What more do you want? Sessions logging? entry and exit points? Why should slash log ip addressses? that is an apache job. Slash logs its own internal behaviour, and it also logs a certain amount of page requests so that it can send a daily email with the activity for that day. But it is very simple - just saying things like 400 people viewed index.pl and 100 people viewed topic so and so. ===== Alex McLintock alex@OWAL.co.uk Open Source Consultancy in London OpenWeb Analysts Ltd, http://www.OWAL.co.uk/ --- SF and Computing Book News and Reviews: http://news.diversebooks.com/ Get Your XML T-Shirt <t-shirt/> at http://www.inversity.co.uk/ COMPETITION : http://news.diversebooks.com/article.pl?sid=01/10/08/1947255 ____________________________________________________________ Nokia Game is on again.
