Okay, just for a test I set the entire /usr/local/slash/ directory to 777 (and I set the sticky bit).
Anyway, now when I try to start/stop slash there appears no error message, but it does not actually start the daemon:

# /etc/init.d/slash start
Starting slashd virtslash: ok PID = 2566
[$ ps -aux | grep slash
root      2570  0.0  0.1  1672  564 pts/1    R    08:55   0:00 grep slash
 $ /etc/init.d/slash stop
Stopping slashd virtslash: /etc/init.d/slash: kill: (2567) - No such process
...using kill -9.../etc/init.d/slash: kill: (2567) - No such process

Maybe some exorcism is in order ;-)

Anyway, I am at the end of my wits here, any help would be great.
