Apologies for posting this here, but I can't find anywhere
else on Slashdot itself to ask and there's nothing in the
FAQ.
I have just started using Slashdot so this is almost
certainly a stupid question. Please be merciful.
I have posted a handful of times as Comments rather
than Replies to an existing comment. Some of these
appear as Replies to a (random?) pre-existing comment,
and I can not for the life of me work out why/what I need
to do different to force a post to be a top-level story
Comment rather than a level-1+ Reply to existing
Comment.
User Action: [view story & have something to say &]
click on Reply button at top of comment area.
Result; sometimes a Post/Comment, sometimes a Reply
to another comment, apparently chosen at random since
they don't appear to be near the current bottom/most-
recent.
Importance: world-shaking. truly the fate of nations
hangs in the balance. also, ongoing irritation as Sal sees
comments effectively disappear because as replies they
are off-topic & read stupidly.

    I'm guessing a misunderstanding...

Sal, give us more detail; which story did you click "Reply" on (NOT
"Reply To This"), and what cid ended up being posted (the "(#8765432)"
    text in your comment's header)?

OK. Thanks for your time, sorry so much of it was wasted. If it crops up
again, we welcome the opportunity to look into it!
