What do you mean by separated pipes here? I was currently planning to use 2 pipes, one for each direction, this is compatible with FPGALink, UART, SPI, ... . Separate bidirectional pipes for configuration/command/status and for data storage would probably be useful, were you describing something like this? Since you are talking about a common implementation in host software you probably meant something else.
 

Peter: is this true? If so that would be amazing! I had envisioned the
need for a whole slew of protocol variants depending on the hardware
