The first time barnyard is started, it should connect to the database and insert its information into the sensor table. From a mysql prompt (mysql -U <username> -D sguildb), try running 'SELECT * FROM sensor;' It should return at least one row with your sensor in it. If not, then barnyard (actually the sguil output plugin) is accessing the DB correctly.
