Tom has been working on the bitmap font support (in some cases this still suffers from a dependence on GLUT fonts -- not desirable).
Need someone working on the textured font support.
Support for GLUT fonts is still in there, but it is no longer required. SGL can now load the system's windowing bitmap fonts. It is up to the user to query the system for valid font names.
Textured fonts are still required to close this "bug" (feature request).
