well, I won't put effort into that, since

  • the private/public key variant is working well. If you save your private key without password and PAgeant loads it during startup, you get what you want.
  • it's very conveniant: if you need access to a new server, simply add your public key to that server.
  • it's safer. You can even disable password based login on the server, which stops effectively attackers trying user/pass combinations

There is no way to save the password with PuTTY or SFTP4TC.

Instead: Create a private/public key pair with PuTTYgen then load the key with PAgeant. You need the password only once while loading the key.

A good tutorial is here:

  1. Select "Network Neighborhood"

  3. Select "<edit connections>"

The bottom most item in the category tree is the "SFTP4TC" item.

The timeout handling should be the same as the original PuTTY does.

So if PuTTY connects and SFTP4TC does not, it's an issue here. If not you should file your request at PuTTY's.

I don't understand, what means you help "go to Category::SFTP4TC:home dir" - where is it?

Is it in PuTTY configuration? In Total Commander configuration? In SFTP4TC configuration? Is it some dialog or some config file? Or should I find it in online doc? I've searched many places but found nothing :-(

This is my advice:
in the internet , many other version of the putty can save the password, i think the putty is modified by someone. So, i think SFTP4TC author can modify the SFTP4TC , then , SFTP4TC can save password , we can login into the server automatic, no need to input the password. This is the best way.
How do you think?

Installation Help

<body><body.content><block>
The 'Network Neighborhood' referenced is in TC, not Windows. That's where many of us were confused. (Me, too.) :)

In TC, look for a backslash icon, next to all of your mapped drives, directly above the file area. It has 2 little computers connected together as a graphic, and instead of a drive letter, has a backslash: .

Click this icon. This takes you to the network neighborhood.

===================================

So, from the top:
1) Download wfx_sftp_1_2_58_1_setup.exe
2) Run it.
2.5) setup_tc_group_desc
(.) for current user
3) From TC, select: Configuration --> Options --> Plugins --> [ Configure ] File System Plug-ins (WFX)
4) Confirm that you see "Secure FTP Connections" in the list.
4.5) If not, choose [ Add ], find plugin_sftp.wfx on your system, and add it.
4.75) There may be more to it than this. I don't know, as I personally didn't have to do it. The setup.exe did it for me.
5) Get out of the configuration screens: [ OK ] --> [ OK ]
6) Find the Network Neighborhood icon in the TC interface. This icon looks like 2 computers connected together, next to a . This icon should be the last icon in the list of available drives. It should also be available from the drive drop-down box above the file display area.
7) Open the \ drive. (The Network Neighborhood).
8) Open the "Secure FTP Connections" directory.

9A) Select "Quick Connection" to create a new connection to the URL that supports secure FTP that you're trying to get to.
9.1) Provide the URL to connect to. e.g. An IP address, or some alias to an IP address.
9.2) Log in as user / password, etc. Just follow the prompts.

OR

9B) Create a connection to a place you will visit often:
9.1) Select "Edit Connections"
9.2) [ New ] --> title: Linux --> host: <IP address> --> supply username, password, and homedir --> [ OK ]
9.3) Find your new connection in the list, and double-click it to open it.
9.4) Wait a few seconds. It might not seem instantaneous.

DONE!

You should now have a secure FTP connection in TC.

Finally, thank the authors! We (your loyal users) really appreciate the work you have done!

I tried FileZilla and that worx fine... so it is possible.

Hi Zdenek,

sftp4tc doesn't have such feature. maybe i look at this in few days. but i'm sure that there wouldn't be a solution to this problem soon. this plugin is based on putty, so the question is, if putty's psftp can handle such files. Actually I'm looking for some free time to evaluate libcurl, which is a library that can ftp, scp and ftps - putty is just a application, which can be used to write a plugin, but i've never be happy with this fact. WinSCPis a cool application, but it's written in borland's C-Builder, so it's not as suitable for open source, so till that i suppose, you stay using winscp :-( i'm really sorry.

if you use sftp, you need ssh version 2 - hence you need rss2 key. if you log in to the shell using putty you can choose which version you wish to use (server's policy can disallow the use of version 1). if you use version 1 you use the rss version of the key. ssh version 2 allows dss keys too, so you can have three different keys in registry. </block></body.content></body>

<body><body.content><block>
Hi,

this is SFTP, not FTPS homepage. Actually, I can still answer your question :-) But first, let me say the bad news. I think FTPS Plugin would newer reach next release, as noone helps me with that and it has some problems I can't solve. Maybe I could, who knows...

So if you have installed it properly - I know, that it's not easy. you can right click (or press popup-win-key) on "FTPS Connections" you get the popup menu, where the second item is "properties" or equivalent in your language. if that doesn't work you have to copy all of the released dlls in system32 folder.
if it works you should get a simpler connection dialog as this plugin has. you should press "New" and fill "session", "type" and "host". optionaly you can check "global" and so on.
As I already said, I'm aware of those problems and I would release a new version, if there was no problems with underlaying ACE-Library. I think I miss something and I don't know what. I'm sorry.

First, which package did you downloaded?
This plugin is standard Total Commander's plugin. As I just realised, Total Commander has a basic documentation on installing plugins.
The name "Network Neighborhood" is used by Total Commander, so if your language is english you have this.
You can verify your connection (assuming you using version 6.51 of TC) by opening Configuration/Options/Plugins/FileSystemsPlugins - Configure.
If it is in, it should work.

From what I remember from that version (also built on .60) is that he uses the *nix code (for ini-file) instead of the windoze specific to use the registry. Haven't looked over the source, but I doubt it's much work involved ;)

PortablePutty uses a launcher which redirects registry access to an ini file. There is no code modification to putty.

BUT: 1.3.60.5 is able to use INI files from 3 locations:

  • home folder

You can also copy entires from one location to another. It's a bit clumsy but it works.

What I consider now:
- all Sessions starting with "ini_" are stored in an ini file.

- renaming an entry from "foo" to "ini_foo" would move (copy?) it from registry to ini. And vice versa.

PuTTY / SFTP4TC and passwords
</head>
<body><body.content><block>
PuTTY and thus SFTP4TC does not use unix private keys loacted in your .ssh directory.

So PuTTY and thus SFTP4TC will always ask for a password unless
- you are using PAgeant to provide the private key.
- or the private key file is configured for the connection

Best is to use PAgeant since you can use password protected private key files and only unlock the keys once per starting windows:

  1. Use PuTTYgen to convert the unix key file into a PuTTY key file
  2. Start PAgeant and load the keys. (This can be done via startup)

Use existing faqs and docs for PuTTY to work it out.

The simplest way is:

Create a working connection with PuTTY.

If this works, the versions .60..* will work too.

Advantage: One connection definition works for both.

The idea of 1.3 is to use PuTTY's code wherever possible. This way PuTTY and SFTP4TC share the same configuration.

The self made configuration 1.2.* (and older versions) does not provide the full configuration as PuTTY does (well, maybe enough?).

For now you have to live with 1.2.60.1.
The 1.3.60.* branch looks quite stable now and will rely on PuTTY code. But feel free to file a feature request for your wish.

After looking through the PuTTY sources it seem possible to make the command for the sftp subsystem configurable, so you could enter

The readme file for "SFTP for TotalCMD" says something about profiles, but I can't find the file "ftps4tc_connections.xml" anywhere on my HD.

I don't know where to start. I want to connect to a given FTP site using different kinds of SSL. You mention 3 different kinds of ssl, but dont' say how to access them, how to do them, how to _ them.

I know how to connect to an ftp site using TC. I know how to add a file ssystem plugin. I added your plugin by adding the *.wfx" file.

But there's no way to "go into" the program, to say, here's the pub, and h ere's the kind of ssl I want to use.

Can you give me a hint where to look to read up on this? </block></body.content></body>

The plugin for Totalcmd is not working for OpenVMS and I thought that the plugin is build on the structure of PSFTP. If I connect by the plugin I get the following:

one question about key
</head>
<body><body.content><block>
This plugin is great. I use it instead of WinSCP to connect to server running SSH. But I have few questions.
This plugin uses putty cache (in registry) to save public server keys, right? I found, that if I connect to ssh server for the first time from putty, putty create value in registry called rsa@port:dnsofserver. but after that, if i connect through TC plugin for the first time to the same server, I get no message, that key from the server already exists, instead, it shows there is no key cached in registry (but one key from that server is there from putty log int!). when I click yes, second key is stored in putty cache, which now looks rsa2@port:dnsoftheserver. So there is number 2 in the name, and the value of the key is totaly different than the one from putty. So I have 2 different public keys from one server!! and I am sure that it is no MITM attack:) I dont understand this.
Thx for explanation. </block></body.content></body>

PuTTY SSH connects but not SFTP, for one site
</head>
<body><body.content><block>
Hi!

Firstly, many thanks for this plugin--it is great as it removes the need, in some cases for my company VPN, which can be terribly slow at times.

Secondly, I have a problem. I may be the cause of it, but do not know how to debug. For some sites, everything is fine. For one in particular, the following happens: (1) From PuTTY, perfect connection. (2) From the plugin, I get a "connection failed". As a test, I have made a copy of the PuTTY config entry which works, just changed the server name and the behaviour is the same (ok PuTTY, no TC). I have noticed something weird, but I wonder if there is any correlation with this problem (and my guess is no): if in the MS-DOS shell I use ssh (OpenSSH), it connects without asking for the password; bizarrely, sftp does ask for the password (and I have no clue why). From some other Unix machine connecting to the same server does not require the password either way. I tried to dump some log using the options in the PuTTY interface, but it does not seem to work.

Thirdly, minor comment: as someone else has been pointing out also in this forum, I too have been looking for quite a bit of time for a menu option "Network Neighbourhood" and I wasted 15' before realizing that it is the name of one of the icons I never use. Silly me, but perhaps adding a few words in the top page of this site may save some times to other users as dumb as myself.... ;^)

Thanks!

If you can send by mail some info, I'd be glad to try, but I have NO CONTROL on how EPFL sends out mail and have NO ACCESS to the IEEE.ORG domain (they just provide me with an alias for my comfort). Note also that I tried to send you a mail from my EPFL.CH address but it made no difference. I am trying it again with this message just in case.

Yes No

I did it 3 times, so it is perfectly deterministic. Let me know if I can assist you in debugging this issue.

Thanks a lot for your plugin (excellent!) and for your immediate help!

p.

p.s.: If you allow me, maybe your system is too strict. I am sure that you are technically right in terms of standards and protocols (I do not even understand what you are talking about), but in practice I send some thousands e-mail per year to hundreds of correspondents in all organizations all over the world, and yours address is the only one I cannot send e-mail at all, not even if you want to receive my mails. I guess it would be wise that you revise the strictness of your system.... ;^) </block></body.content></body>

RE: PuTTY SSH connects but not SFTP, for one site
</head>
<body><body.content><block>
Yes, you are right, logging works--my fault. I am using it now.

Back to the original problem--now with the logs, the problem goes beyond my understanding of the SSH protocol. Here is the information, if you can and wish to try to understand what is going on.

I have run four testcases and looked at the logs: (1) with an sftp host where both (1a) PuTTY and (1b) SFTP4TC work fine, and (2) with another sftp host where (2a) PuTTY works fine but (2b) SFTP4TC does not work. The PuTTY/SFTP4TC configs are all identical except for the hostname (that is, I loaded one, changed the hostname, and saved with a new name).

In case (2b), the issue seems to be that the SSH protocol is abruptly stopped when the first authentication attempt using "none" is performed. Here is how the log ends:

Event Log: Initialised HMAC-SHA1 server->client MAC algorithm
Outgoing packet type 5 / 0x05 (SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST)
00000000 00 00 00 0c 73 73 68 2d 75 73 65 72 61 75 74 68 ....ssh-userauth
Incoming packet type 6 / 0x06 (SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT)
00000000 00 00 00 0c 73 73 68 2d 75 73 65 72 61 75 74 68 ....ssh-userauth
Event Log: Reading private key file "C:\users\ienne.ssh\id_dsa_putty"
Outgoing packet type 50 / 0x32 (SSH2_MSG_USERAUTH_REQUEST)
00000000 00 00 00 05 69 65 6e 6e 65 00 00 00 0e 73 73 68 ....ienne....ssh

00000020 6f 6e 65 one

Notice that there is no response visible in the log from the host (should be a failure message).

For a direct comparison, here is the corresponding snippet for (2a) where exactly the same thing happens, but we see the initial failure and things move on successfully:

Event Log: Initialised HMAC-SHA1 server->client MAC algorithm
Outgoing packet type 5 / 0x05 (SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST)

And, for a third comparison, here is how in (1b) SFTP4TC handles the very same situation with the other host, and things go perfectly well here--notice that it is very much like (2a):

Event Log: Initialised HMAC-SHA1 server->client MAC algorithm
Outgoing packet type 5 / 0x05 (SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST)
00000000 00 00 00 0c 73 73 68 2d 75 73 65 72 61 75 74 68 ....ssh-userauth

00000000 00 00 00 0c 73 73 68 2d 75 73 65 72 61 75 74 68 ....ssh-userauth
Event Log: Reading private key file "C:\users\ienne.ssh\id_dsa_putty"

Now, the question is: why in case (2b) SFTP4TC does not even show the failure message (that is weird, isn't it) and does not move on to other authentication methods as it does in case (1b)?

I have absolutely no clue, but perhaps you have.

You may want to contact me by e-mail to continue the discussion perhaps--if you have time and are interested in understanding the issue.

The target system is (uname -a):
Linux genovese 2.6.29-xeon-aufs2.29-ipv6-qos-grsec #1 SMP Thu Jul 9 16:42:58 PDT 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

openssl installed as /usr/lib/sftp-server
/usr/lib is not in my path, I added it to .bash_profile but this made no difference

No putty log is started.

If I choose "<edit connections>" and open the same connection via putty screen it prompts for username and password then a message box gets a slider to "99%" and freezes total commander.

the putty log file is created via this method here is the content (logging level set to SSH packets) :

Failing to connect in SFTP4TC extra info
</head>
<body><body.content><block>
Since I last test I downloaded and installed this putty version:

  OriginalFilename : PuTTY
  FileVersion : Development snapshot 2009-10-12:r8666
  ProductVersion : Development snapshot 2009-10-12:r8666
  LegalCopyright : Copyright © 1997-2009 Simon Tatham.

FileSize : 466944 bytes ( 456.000 KB, 0.445 MB )
FileVersionInfoSize : 1724 bytes
File/Product version : 0.60.8666.0 / 0.60.8666.0

I think the above change was significant.

I have made some changes to my putty session settings - I think the changes were terminal ident, and setting my RSA key file up for single sign on - do not think this change was significant.

This had made a difference to "<edit connections>" option. If I choose "<edit connections>" and open my session it works ok (I see "(1)" prefix before session name while other times just "FROM" "connecting" - this is new).

Choosing the session name from total commander "Secure FTP Connections" list is STILL CRASHING WITH the "Windows exception: C0000005"

Hope these observations help.

Hi,
thank you for this great extension!
So is it possible to change user before sftp/scp session is started? Note I can't login as a root because of security reasons. For more info see http://winscp.net/eng/docs/faq_su .

With best regards, Milan. </block></body.content></body>

Hi,
ad 2) Sorry I can't help but I agree that there should be some extended log possibilities. You know CONNECTION FAILED is not enough.
ad 3) Totally agree. I spent for two hours with that because I tried to find another one plugin. I though that this is not working for me at first time. I think it can be useful to add two little images on page Summary and more big detailed screen shots on Sreenshots page. This can be enough IMHO.

Thanks for the fixes! Now TC doesn't hang when I connect to some OpenSSH servers. I mean, it works with 1.2.60.1.
1.3.60.0, is it still experimental?
I keep TC on my USB key and won't be able to use v1.3 because it stores sessions in the registry, not ini file.
At the beginning, I tried this version. Created some sessions, but could not connect anywhere: when doubleclick session icon, TC's copy dialog appears and the panel contents not changed. But that's not the case. It created some sessions under HKCU\Software\simontatham\putty
and when I whent back to 1.2.60.1, that version also refused to work, so I had to delete the key

Hi,

I'm very glad that there's again development on this plugin. I must just say that it doen't work as nice as the old one. I understand the advantage of using putty code where possible but, firstly I don't even get a connection to any of my server....

a Small tutorial on how the new one should be used would be nice aswell as the option for using it on a portable version of TC would really be nice.

But still thank a million for starting development on this nice pulug-in again.
