My name is Andrew Miller and I am on the volunteer coordinator for the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair. I would like to discuss some options for development of volunteer sign-up through SFIAB. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks. Respectfully, Andrew Miller North Carolina State University '13 Biomedical Engineering akm...@nc... |

Hi, Not sure if anyone actually checks this list anymore, so sending it directly to you as well James, The recent commits (2490 and 2492) by the user "dennis" were committed using dos line terminators, as such the commits show the file being completely rewritten. Could we make sure everyone that's committing is using unix line endings? Thanks, Justin Reardon |

Mornin James, Just checking in with you about the ISEF form upload functionality that was being developed for future SFIAB release 2.2.2. Our North Carolina State fair is really interested in this version of the product. Any expected release date? Thanks for everything! Thus far we are extremely pleased with your product and are very thankful for all your work and attention to detail. We were wondering if you would be willing to share related best practices and a backup / restore procedure to support disaster recovery, retention of critical data, and transfer between system for redundancy. Additional administrative functionality in the form of selectable / configurable options through the SFIAB software would be ultimate, but we understand that this may infringe slightly on the hosting features. Any suggestions you would be willing to share would be most appreciated. ====================================================================== ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James - 08-26-08 11:26 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Glad to hear! We've actually been adding some features recently to make SFIAB more viable for the USA market.. The next version (hopefully to be released soon) will definitely make your life easier. I would _definitely_ recommend upgrading when we release it. If you're set on hosting it on your own (instead of using our new hosting platform), you might still be interested in a support plan offered through the same system http://www.sfiab.com <http://www.sfiab.com/> . You also signup for a free www.sfiab.com account in order to compare our "live" system with your system incase you run into bugs that might just be due to your LAMP configuration. I think pretty much everything to do with backup/restore is generic for all database/web based apps, nothing specific for SFIAB needs to be done. eg) - RAID your filesystem - Use phpMyAdmin to create a complete database dump (or the command line tools) for off-site backups - Have rollover servers in place (or at least, on standby) - Keep redundant power supplies (UPS / Diesel Generator) - Have redundant backbones from different upstream providers I'll leave this open as a feature request, because I was planning on implementing a database backup/restore function into the SFIAB Configuration section. Cheers, James ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James - 08-26-08 16:27 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, out of curiosity, how did you hear about SFIAB? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caveny-cox - 08-26-08 17:06 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I was researching best practices for the logic model while working on constructing a relational database to support project tracking, youth registration, and dynamic judge assignemnts when I stumbled across the SFIAB web site through an internet search. When do you expect to have the next release posted for download? Is there a faq online that specifies idiosyncrasies related to the specific SFIAB upgrade process, or is it pretty strait forward? Thanks for a wonderful tool! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James - 08-26-08 17:16 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ahh I see! Hopefully by the end of September, the new version should be ready for download. But you can access it anytime through Subversion (http://www.sfiab.ca/development.php). There are often new smaller-update versions released througout the year, leading up to the 'fair season', so familiarizing yourself with the update process would be a good idea. The upgrade process is extremely easy, assuming you haven't made any custom changes to any of the files... you just download, uncompress over the old files, and run the db_update.php script to update the database You can find details on the wiki http://www.sfiab.ca/wiki Cheers, James ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James - 09-02-08 15:22 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI - I decided to do a release sooner rather than later. 2.2.0 is now released and can be downloaded from http://www.sfiab.ca/download.php . There will still be several updates coming up over the next few months, but this version has some of the major new features included. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James - 09-24-08 18:00 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Backup/Restore functionality is now added to the Configuration page. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caveny-cox - 10-06-08 10:32 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello James, This requested change was reported included/resolved in release 2.2.2, but all I see available for download is 2.2.0. Is there another version access site for releases not yet published? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James - 10-06-08 13:27 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The feature has been added to the development version (2.2.1) available through subversion, which will become 2.2.2 when it is released. 2.2.2 has not been released yet. Hello James, I'm excited about the added functionality. The resolution page indicates that the added functionality is contained in version 2.2.2, but all I can find on-line access to is version 2.2.0. Is there a special access page, or is it just a matter of time until the new version is posted for download. Thanks again for everything! Thanks James, I am using the version 2.1.8-r3 and it is not fixed do I need to wait till you update me to see the fix? Mike -----Original Message----- From: sfi...@li... Subject: [SFIAB 0000338]: Committee Name Tag The following issue has been RESOLVED. ====================================================================== http://www.sfiab.ca/bugtracker/view.php?id=338 ====================================================================== Reported By: mreardon Assigned To: ====================================================================== Project: SFIAB Issue ID: 338 Category: Administration Reproducibility: always Severity: major Priority: normal Status: resolved Resolution: fixed Fixed in Version: 2.1.8-r3 ====================================================================== Date Submitted: 03-15-2008 14:20 EDT Last Modified: 03-24-2008 16:37 EDT ====================================================================== Summary: Committee Name Tag Description: After logging in and clicking on "Administer the Fair" - Report Management, then select my report in this case Name Tags - Committee Members No Box. Select Try this Report and click GO. The Report generates almost correctly, the problem here is the fair name is not centered on the card. See sample of report attached titled "Try This Report.pdf" If I click on My Reports from Committee Main and select my report "Name Tags - Committee Members No Box" from my Fair Day list, accept the defaults and click Generate Report, the fair name is still not centered but the other text is Left Justified. See attached report titled "My Reports.pdf" Not sure why this would happen, I would think that both should be the same. The only configuration change to the default committee name tag report that I have made is I moved the persons title up a line and changed the static text in the 2nd column. ====================================================================== ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mreardon - 03-15-08 14:24 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The same happens with the Judge name tags as well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mreardon - 03-15-08 16:03 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok I figured it out, the issue with the centering of the fair name or lack of centering is because I did not upload a logo, the space to the left of the fair name is obviously reserved for the logo. Hi everyone, 2.1.6 is now released. Anyone hosted under the YSF server (https://secure.ysf-fsj.ca/sfiab/yourfair) has now been updated. This version has several critical bug fixes to 2.1.4, as well as a new report management feature that allows each committee member to maintain a list of reports that are relavent to themselves, while ignoring reports that they dont care about :) Here's the CHANGE LOG 2.1.4 to 2.1.6 (Dec 12, 2007) Fix multi-role accounts (so committee and volunteers can have one account with both roles) Fix wording 'input received signature forms' Fix error checking on judges teams timeslots assignments Fix an potential infinite loop on PDF generation Fix judge scheduler detection of more than one divisional award per division/category Fix judge scheduler detection of existing divisional awards when filterdivisionbycategory is used Fix email detection in isEmailAddress() (this was preventing the system from sending most emails!) Refactor common AJAX code into a separate include file Separate awards ceremony script generation to a separate page -- eventually it'll have options on that page New report generation screen that lets you override the default format, stock and year of a report before its created New 'my reports' report manager - each committee member can maintain their own list of reports applicable to them, sorted by categories Add email address to new participant email, and send the new participant email to `emailcontact` if it exists Fix judge special award signup if they've specified they are from a specific special award Fix date of birth complete/incomplete for 0000-00-00 dates Fix MySQL5 query on judging teams management page Add school access codes report to report generator and remove custom report Add more school fields to the report generator Fix fairyear rollover of categories-divisions-links if filtercategoriesbydivision is used Usability updates to award contacts & award sponsors pages Cheers, James -- James Grant Lightbox Technologies 312-240 Catherine St. Ottawa, ON. Hi everyone, just a quick note to say that SFIAB version 2.1.4 has now been released with TONS of new features and bugfixes. Im anticipating that 2.1.4 will be the last major feature release for this year's fair season, but im sure there'll be a couple minor bugfix updates over the next few months. It is HIGHLY recommended that you upgrade whatever version you have to 2.1.4. The upgrade process is seamless -- download the package, uncompress the files overtop the files you have, and run the db/db_update.php script to update your database. You can download SFIAB package from http://www.sfiab.ca/download.php If you are running SFIAB under http://secure.ysf-fsj.ca/sfiab/yourfair then you've already been updated. If you are still running SFIAB under http://www.sfiab.ca/yourfair then you have NOT been updated, you should login to the YSF Affiliation system and enable SFIAB. Here's the complete CHANGELOG for 2.1 branch: 2.1.2 to 2.1.4 (Dec 4, 2007) Add ability to export reports that have been created so they can easily be shared Add more school information columns to the report generator and add a new schools list report Add CURL checks and give errors/warnings if its not there Add external award winners postback (to resubmit the winners to wherever the awards came from) Auto-create sponsors for downloaded awards Add external award source downloader Add external award source manager to manage the external award sources that awards can be downlaoded from Add ability to configure display/require fields for users (committee/volunteer) Add description to awards and add it to the awards ceremony script if it exists Add trophy selection to award prizes (student keeper, student return, school keeper, school reteurn) Add ability for future updates to 'built-in' reports Fix wording for 'open or invite' registration type on schoolaccess page Add new user management system and convert committee members and volunteers to use it Fix logins for users with expired passwords Add ability for DB update script to also run a PHP script before and/or after the DB script is run for the version Add extra error checking for system() calls on install and update to prevent broken installs/updates when system() isnt allowed Add datetime field support for tableeditor Add volunteer registration, and volunteer job description management Add sponsor organization to awards ceremony script Add ability to generate awards ceremony scripts for only certain award types Add ability to generate awards ceremony script for a previous year Rename the SESSION variable cookie name to reduce the possibility of SESSION classes for multiple SFIAB installs running under the same domain. Add more error checking on the image uploader Fix PDF links with the broken Internet Explorer/SSL implementation Allow 'username' to be used insetad of 'email address' for logins for users without email addresses Fix wording for 'project_num_format' variable Add a login/info bar to the header, and cookiecrumb trail for current location Add judges 'invite only' screen to Page Texts editor Add internal document manager for committee documents Make tableeditor backwards compatible with single table (non OO/class based) editors Use FCKEditor for HTML editor for Page Texts (if FCKEditor is found in the /fckeditor folder - needs to be installed manually) Add 'committee members' as possible communication module recipients Fix a project number uniqueness problem with multi-year data Add ability to have multiple email recipients for a single project registration (eg teachers) Replace all 'from' in emails with the FAIRMANAGER - make sure its set Add emails to send students on 'registration complete' and 'registration payment pending' Add award sponsor to winners entry page Add ability for teacher to 'auto-login' as a student that they have already invited Update emails to allow [FAIRNAME] to substitute in body of messages Fix some MySQL report queries Fix ambiguity in the term "# of prizes" vs "# awarded" Rework judge management - judge list 'delete' unlinks from fairyear, judge manager 'delete' deletes completley Fix logo display problem on /config and /admin Add option to view reports from past years Character encoding updates for MySQL 5.x Add judge registration checks for when judge registration is not yet open One-click YSF Affiliation Stats Fix award nomination eligible award list for multi-year data Fix school mailing labels in french Fix config types/config values on rollover/install Fix some register_globals on reliances, and add a .htaccess to disable register globals if possible 2.1.0 to 2.1.2 (Sep 20, 2007) Fix a bug that prevented the rollover script from properly rolling over the award prizes. Add a temporary workaround script to re-roll the award prizes for anyone thats already done it. Add school type report to report generator, so you can create labels for all schools 2.0.12 to 2.1.0 (Sep 11, 2007) New custom report generator implementation and many, many defualt pre-programmed reports Show 'Confirmed Participants' list when its appropriate to do so Show link to Confirmed Participants list immediately after regclose, it will be empty with a notice as to when the list will be available Add required registration fee to forms checkoff page Add three new email recipients to communications module: special award sponsors (confirmed only, unconfirmed only and all) Add 'none' as a tshirt option for the admin student editor Implement hr and vspace in the CSV report generator Auto-focus the input box on the input received forms page In judges division groupings, only show the count of projects that are complete or paymentpending Position project number absolutely on table labels, incase title wraps to two lines preventing the entire label from splitting pages Add page numbers to PDF generated reports Optional parameter to allow/disallow multi-line text fields in PDF reports Fix a bug where the number of students on a project could be greater than the maximum Clarification of "prize" field usage Add special awards judging scheduler, creates judging teams for awards, assigns judges to special awards, obeys judges special awards preferences Update the awards management interface, much more user friendly now Fix a bug where the judge scheduler would have problems if there was 0 judge div groupings Implement web consent restrictions, to allow firstname, lastname and photo to be prevented from being displayed on a per student basis on the public award winners page, and confirmed participants page. Update tour selection reports Fix an few places where we rely on register_globals to be on Add option for winner selection page to show all ELIGIBLE projects for special awards, not just nominated ones (incase the winning project happens to be a proejct that didnt nominate for the award) Updates to scheduler to ignore 'willing chair' for team size of 1 Fix a bug in the project title saving where quote marks were being requoted Create a report with all info required for the sci-tech ontario winners submission Fix a bug where exit() wasnt being called after a few header("Location:") redirects Fix winners page to properly show multi-year data -- James Grant Lightbox Technologies 312-240 Catherine St. Ottawa, ON. Hmm, so it - kept the awards sponsors - kept the awards - kept the award contacts - did not keep the award prizes do you know (by chance) of approximately when you did the rollover? so I can figure out which version of SFIAB you were using at that time... maybe its a bug thats already been fixed... if not i'll try to re-create the issue in the next few days. Hi everyone (awefully quiet on these lists lately!) (my apologies if you get this email more than once!) SFIAB v2.0 has now been released and can be downloaded from http://www.sfiab.ca/download.php If you are hosting SFIAB on the Lightbox Technologies webserver, then you've already been updated to the new version! * Remember, that if you used SFIAB last year, that you'll need to "Roll Over" your fair year under the SFIAB Configuration page before you start getting it ready for the 2007 fair. * I encourage everyone to check out the new version, submit bug reports if you find any on the bugtracker http://www.sfiab.ca/bugtracker * I also encourage everyone to help me out a bit with the documentation! All of the documentation is now stored in the WIKI, and accessible by clicking the little question mark in the top-right of each page. A lot of hte pages are currently empty. If you think you know enough about what the page does, start editing it on the wiki for everyone else to benefit. The main wiki page with other articles on it is here: http://www.sfiab.ca/wiki *** A list of the major changes in the new version: 1.1.0 to 2.0.0 Add school importer from CSV Add generic mailing label generator Add teacher signature option to signature page Add a AJAX powered translations dropdown for user entered info Add new fields to sponsors table Add new fields to award contacts table Add new fields to schools table Add prize value to prizes table Add a judge management interface with new generic editor class Add a link to return to school access page once logged in and changed pages Add One-Click CWSF registration Add an integegrated help system for admin/config Add a live version checker to check for up-to-date version of SFIAB Add a live language pack installer to install new language packs Add a judge scheduler status page, and when running the scheduler, fork it off in the background Add option to delete a student's registration Add several new reports Fix filename of awards ceremony script Fix the length of several email and phone fields Fix NOTICE reporting in PHP disabled for systems that dont do it globally Fix some missing i18n's Fix many other smaller bugs! Hi everyone, As the new science fair season approaches, i thought ti would be a good idea to package up a new version of the software for any regions that want to test it out on their own servers... this version has many bugfixes and updates and several new features added over the past 6 months or so... however SFIAB is still under heavy development as we anticipate a "Version 2.0 release" around the end of October. The new version can be downloaded from http://www.sfiab.ca/download.php If you are hosting on our server, then your installation will already have been updated to this version. Here is a summary of the most relavent changes: 1.0.4 to 1.1.0 More options added to communication module New report - projects/students per school New report - logistical requirements (electricity, tables, etc) Put fair logo in the header Fix issues with student viewer Add judge language to judge list export Fix some issues with judge team assignments CSV reports for nametags Configurable judging questions Students can now logout When rolling over sponsors, keep the old sponsors but set them to 'unconfirmed' Roll over the schools properly Judge division groupings, used for judge scheduler New implementation of judge team assignments (much better!) New implmentation of judge/timeslot scheduler Split configuration variables into multiple 'tabs' of related variables Allow scheduling of projects that are still 'payment pending' Assign project numbers for projects that are 'payment pending' Show dates in pre-defined order instead of chronologically And many other small bugfixes and changes as well as refactoring and simplification of much of the code -- James Grant Lightbox Technologies http://www.lightbox.ca 613-294-3670 |

On Gentoo linux it was very easy.. for php5: emerge pdflib dev-php5/pecl-pdflib for php4: emerge pdflib dev-php4/pecl-pdflib if your not using gentoo, try searching in your distribution for those two packages... if all else fails, download the files directly. pdflib is the main library and is available from pdflib.com, pecl-pdflib is the PHP PECL extension for the PDFLib library and is available from http://pecl.php.net/package/pdflib Cheers, James On Friday 25 August 2006 13:07, John Meskes wrote: > I just trying installing the "new" PDFlib Lite 6.0.3, but I must have > forgotten something, and end up with Fatal error: Call to undefined > function pdf_new() Does anyone have quick step-by-step install notes? > (perhaps to contribute to the wiki?) > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Using Tomcat but need to do more? Hey Justin, you asked yesterday on IRC whether you should create a new db update script or simply edit the latest one... the answer is: create a new one ... always. basically as soon as one is committeed to SVN, its possible that someone could have updated their system with that version... then if you update the same version file, that person that already updated wont get any of your changes, because their system thinks it already has that db version. Its unlikely that many people would have updated between commits, but is possible (it happened to me with dave's db.20 actually)... since most of the installations are on my server, its reasonably safe to assume that there wont be many updates, but as more people start using it on their own servers and running their own updates, there's no telling when they might update. so, yes, create a new one for any db changes you make, then simply bump the db/db.code.version.txt to the new version. it doesnt hurt anything to have many little update files... and possibly makes it even easier to track down issues. Hope this helps oh, and im going to be creating a db.21 today i think, im going to split out the configuration into categories, and add an order field to sort things differently.... so you may want to hold off on creating your own .21, or plan on your update being 22 :) Cheers, James -- James Grant Lightbox Technologies http://www.lightbox.ca 613-294-3670 |

>Hello, The idea for a SFIAB WIKI site grew out of a discussion regarding a user's manual for SFIAB James has written a users manual here: http://www.sfiab.ca/docs/usermanual/ Since writing a users manual can take as much time as writing the program, we came up with the idea of having the users contribute to the manual, using the model of the on line encyclopaedia, Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Record all your insights and work-rounds, so that this becomes a resource that covers all aspects of SFIAB. Hi everyone, Please continue to use the bugtracker to submit and track bug and feature request reports. http://www.sfiab.ca/bugtracker I've added a new feature to the SFIAB website : a sfiab wiki. For those of you that arent familiar with what a wiki is, well, its basically a website like any other, except you, yes, you, the website _user_ has access to add/edit the content of the website. http://www.sfiab.ca/wiki Have something you'd like to share with everyone? some tweak you made to make things run smoother? a frequently asked question that you think others might benefit from? post it on the wiki! I havent put much information up on the wiki yet, because i just set it up... but feel free to start adding stuff to it, and it can always be re-arranged at a later time. (side-note: 'adding' content is a bit counter-intuitive... you need to first SEARCH for the name of the page that you want, and when it doesnt find it, it will give you an option to create it instead.... once its created, make sure you go back to the Main Page, and add a link to your new page....) i promise its not as complicated as it seems, and if you happen to mess something up, it can always be undone! But.... Now for the kicker... Please put your rotten tomatoes away... I'm heading off for a VACATION tomorrow evening, and i wont be back until the 27th of march. Now, I understand that this is prime time for the science fair season, but i assure you, i'll take care of all of your emails, bugreports, etc when I get back! I've checked the ysf site and the sci-tech ontario site, and most of the fairs are the first or second weekends in april, so after i get back we've still got a few days to a few weeks before your fairs :) Lay on the emails and bug reports, and ill sift through them in priority order, i promise! If you start to panic.... remember... breathing is your friend. stand up, take a deep breath, and say "james will take care of it when he gets back" :) However -- I encourage you all to NOT EMAIL ME DIRECTLY, email this list instead! (sfi...@li... and sfi...@li...) if you email this list a question, and someone from another region has the answer, then voila! no need to wait for me! Some of you are experts now using SFIAB, so please, if you can answer someones question, go for it! If anything is extremely urgent / emergency, I will have my business phone line forwarded to my brother (Dave) who will attempt to rectify the situation.... please note: he's in Vancouver, so dont call him at 8:30AM eastern time, like some of you call me :) Thats all! good luck, talk to you all in a few weeks! Hi everyone, I've today packaged and released SFIAB 1.0.4. It contains one critical bugfix when using "invite" or "schoolpassword" participant registration types. It also contains one big new feature, which allows setting the text that is displayed on the exhibitor signature pdf page, and also allows disabling sections of that file if they arent required. here's the notes that i put in the CHANGES file: 1.0.2 to 1.0.4 Check for valid email addresses before sending an email Add a judges list to the judges admin page, allowing removing judges Fix a bug where participant school was not being set for invite or schoolpassword types Convert signature page to be database driven, and allow it to be modified. -- James Grant Lightbox Technologies Inc. http://www.lightbox.org 613-294-3670 |

Hi John, Yes its assumed that you'll overwite all your existing files and install in the same location. If you install in the same location you'll get the db out of date error (which you did).. then its simply a matter of running the db update script. i never thought anyone would run the db update script from within a web browser, i guess it makes sense that most people will run it that way.., I've just always run it from the command line (so ive never noticed that the formatting is bad in a browser). i'll check about adding some html formatting to the output. also, i think i'll look into adding that error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE); to the main source... it shouldnt affect any php4 users but would turn off the notices for all php5 people.. Thanks for the feedback! Ok we can do that, I understand about the other auto-generated text but even some of that is what we want to remove, such as the parent signature section, we do not require parental permission to attend, if the parent brings the student to the fair that is permission enough for us. Anyway maybe it is something that can be looked at for future releases. We will edit it on our own for now. Mike -----Original Message----- From: sfi...@li...
