I'm trying to get the best out of my somewhat expensive hardware and I seem to reach a limit in the decompression speed of RAR archives and I can't tell which component is causing that.
Basically I have an i7 3930k that gives me a 300mb/s rate from performance test. I perform the test with a 512gb SSD rated with 500mb/s read speed as source and ramdisk as target to avoid any bandwidth limitation and I get something around 100mb/s.
I try on another computer, i5 3470 and a slower ssd and I get 90mb/s.
I can't figure out why I cannot get better speed, as I understand CPU is not heavily used for decompression (or is it only using one core and CPU is still the bottleneck?). Could the OS limit it somehow? I have Windows 8.1 installed on both.
Thanks for any tips you can share!
Yes, 7-Zip uses only one CPU thread for RAR decompression.
