adding an option to NOT activate the serial port until an
incoming tcp connection has been established would be
nice. I've tried a number of other programs to do this,
and all of them open the com port the moment the
convertor is started. That's no good. The software I'm
using needs to see soemthing that acts like a modem -
carrier detect and all.

a switch to enable modem-like behavior would be great.
No serial port activity until a telnet connection is made,
then the serial port is opened/activated. That's what I
need.

That is exactly how ser2net works. It will not even attempt
to open the serial port until the TCP connection comes in.
Are you experiencing something different? If so, can you
re-open and give a more complete example so I can reproduce?
