Hi all, I just submitted a redesign of the Special:Browse feature to the SVN, and I hope to get some testing and feedback before releasing it as part of SMW 1.3 (or either scrapping it because everyone hates it). Note that it requires a quite new version of MediaWiki (Release 1.13 or SVN 38254, or newer), or it will break. I hope that all current users of browse are happy with it, I tried to follow the suggestions and concerns from the previous discussion. I hope also that all find it more useful than the previous layout. For an example, you may start here: <http://semanticweb.org/wiki/Special:Browse/Rudi_Studer> Complete documentation can be found here: <http://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Browse> Noteworthy are the two configuration settings, some may find it very helpful to create an easy to browse wiki using the opposite property label. Note that this is a first SVN release. Some names or values may change until the 1.13 release. Best, denny |

Now wait a minute! Some of us don't like to use the development trunk of MediaWiki, precisely because that kind of installation will often break an existing wiki without major command-line script running. For that reason, we prefer to wait until MediaWiki "branches out." That's going to happen in about a month or so. Until then, could we have a moratorium on designs that require people to run "alpha test versions" of MediaWiki? Hi Temlakos, sorry, I was unclear -- you do not need the dev trunk of MediaWiki, I only noted the SVN version for people using SVN update mechanism. The page should work fine with MediaWiki 1.13. But it breaks with 1.12 or older. Is this already considered a problem? Does this clear it up, or did I misunderstand you? I agree that releases of SMW should not depend on a development version of MediaWiki, but should always work on a release of MediaWiki. I am not sure if this needs to be true of SMW SVN versions, too. But in this case this does not apply anyway :) Or is it the case that SMW is more often updated than MW? Support just for 1.13 is fine... It's the latest stable, and so if anyone has an older version, they can use a version of SMW to match. Normally we branch out working copys of extensions along with releases, but SMW goes an extra step and actually tags individual releases of SMW. So if 1.2.x supports 1.12 and up or 1.11 and up whichever it was, but SMW 1.3 only supports 1.13 and up it's perfectly fine. IMHO, it's the extensions that attempt to support as many versions of MW as they possibly can that end up bloated, harder to maintain, and sometimes even buggy. Personally, for my own extensions I don't support anything except the latest stable and alpha. Legacy versions are legacy versions and don't need support for new features. A slight modification of one of my old quotes... "We release new versions of software to add new features, and fix bugs. If you are looking for new features then you should upgrade, even with a higher version number it's the same software. Asking for a brand new feature to be backported to work with an older version of the software, is like asking Microsoft to improve the GUI in Windows 3.11 because it's not good enough. They already did that, they released a new VERSION of Windows with a better GUI." If someone wants to update or install a new version of SMW, then they shouldn't be unwilling to upgrade MediaWiki as well. If they want the features in newer versions of SMW, then they should be willing to update MediaWiki to match up with SMW. If you want to use old versions of one software, then there is no reason to ask that newer versions of other software support your version when they have an older version of their software that supports your old version. /rant, heh... Though, he might have been confused by your "Note that this is a first SVN release. Some names or values may change until the 1.13 release." comment. I believe you actually meant 1.3, as in SMW 1.3, that might have been read as 'MediaWiki 1.13 release' instead of 'SMW 1.3 release' as it was meant to be. ~Daniel Friesen(Dantman, Nadir-Seen-Fire) of: -The Nadir-Point Group (http://nadir-point.com) --It's Wiki-Tools subgroup (http://wiki-tools.com) --The ElectronicMe project (http://electronic-me.org) --Games-G.P.S. I backported the new Browser to be able to work with 1.12 and probably 1.11, not just 1.13 and 1.14alpha due to a few requests. It will be easy to undo the change once we settle for 1.13 as a requirement. Cheers, denny Daniel Friesen wrote: > Support just for 1.13 is fine... The new version looks nice. A question about the functionality: why is the "show/hide properties that link here" link not implemented in Javascript? That would seem to be the obvious way to go. -Yaron On Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 12:38 PM, Daniel Friesen <dan...@te...>wrote: > Support just for 1.13 is fine... Because I don't know much Ajax yet... If someone knows how to mend this (not my Ajax skills, but the special page), feel free to go ahead. Also making the box autocomplete would be cool. Cheers, denny PS: I am afraid Javascript is not enough here, but it requires a call back to server, since the idea of not always showing what links here is to reduce server load (the what links here require significantly more cycles than the outgoing properties). If the servers are strong enough, or the wiki small enough, one could just use the new $smwgBrowseAll setting, as described in the documentation, anyway.
