Hi kghbln, In general we are using HT on MW 1.17 but we needed to avoid the areas which we found to have some trouble. It seems that they are a some open issues around MW 1.17 and jQuery which are not fully resolved yet. Their is a general issue with jQuery when it is loaded through the MW Resourceloader. We found that all scripts that uses the Resourcesloader are loaded at the bottom[1] which means headertabs are loaded after content preparation which makes the page building process looks a kind of awkward at the first page load. We read something about what is called Top load queue in MW 1.19 [2] which might resolve this loading issue in future. As for the tabs issue, we tested tabs with Japanese and Chinese characters or with "/" and didn't found nor got any feedback, so this issue is still open. SMW-Factbox and HT on MW 1.17 do not really play well together and #switchtablink seems to show some problems. We believe it is an awesome extension, which help to unclutter and structure content within a limit page space but our general impression is that the development around HT got somehow quiet, I'm not really sure someone is actively working on it.
