Hi John,

You're (mostly) right about the problem, but not about the solution: Composer doesn't need to be disabled to get things working - rather, there just needs to be some way to tell extensions to exit out immediately when they're included, which I'm guessing is the much easier approach.

I say "mostly" right because, as noted in the other thread, one existing option for wiki farms is to simply have multiple installations of the code, one for each configuration (with SMW, without SMW, etc.). But, as also noted in the other thread, that very quickly becomes too unwieldy to use.

Right I got the impression from the discussion that it's not possible to run a wikifarm that includes SMW for some sites, but not for others. Is this right? If so, it does sound as if a switch is needed to turn off composer so that wikifarm code can load extensions in the conventional way. If I missed something, please correct! Thanks/john

Hi,

There was a thread about a week ago on the semediawiki-user mailing list, called "Howto install SMW using git?", that became a discussion about a number of things, including why there should be a way to disable extensions installed via Composer. I suggested using one or more global variables for that - like "$wgDisabledExtensions".

There was no real resolution to that thread, so: do any of the SMW developers on this list have any thoughts about this? I think having such a thing is crucial, whether it's done through a global variable or some other method. (Though I can't think of any other method at the moment.)
