Semantic Notifications actually came up briefly at the meeting; and it seems to me quite useful, and a likely candidate for the basis of workflow functionality. However, there are several disadvantages to it at the moment that I think render it not yet fully usable for this purpose:
- it's part of Halo - in my opinion, it should be a separate extension; and from what I understand, this is being planned
- it lets one set up notifications per user, but not for an entire user group - being able to define and use groups is a need common to both access-control and workflow, and hopefully there'll be way to define groups that can be used by both systems (I should note that "groups" here would most likely be defined in wiki pages, and distinct from MediaWiki's own user groups)
- the defining of queries and notifications happens directly in the database, and not through wiki pages - it's always better, in my opinion, to define data within the wiki when possible.

Hi,

the Halo-extension offers Semantic Notifications since version 1.3. This allows you to formulate a query. This query is executed periodically. If the result of that query changes, you get an email that shows the differences.

Is there somebody working on the notification/workflow topic?
I am currently considering coming up with an extension which monitors
changes on semantic annotations in a wiki and issues an event once such
a change is observed. Such events could be used as an input for a workflow.
If somebody is working on/thinking about that I would be interested in
an offline exchange of ideas.
