I installed SEB on a VM to test if the product would be suitable for our needs (web based testing with parsys) but it says it won't run on a VM.

Is there a way? We're planning to use this or something like it with VDI in the near future so if this could be made to work so that the test takers wouldn't be able to open another tab or such it would be great.

    Please read the manual at:
    http://www.safeexambrowser.org/windows/win_usermanual_en.html#SecurityPane

You need to enable the option "Allow SEB to run inside virtual machine".

But this makes only sense, if your VDI clients are secured, so that examinees cannot switch away from the virtual desktop to the local machine and start software like a not secured web browser there.

When we are using VDI in exams, we run SEB on both the physical exam client, there SEB just starts the VDI client (and its browser window is switched off, see config tool tab Browser -> Use SEB without browser window). Like this examinees can only use the software provided in the virtual desktop. There another instance of SEB is used, with enabled SEB task bar and additional software defined as permitted processes.

The user endpoint device will be set so all they will be able to do is open the VDI client, so "tabbing out" to a browser won't be possible.

Ok when I check that checkbox and then close the config tool it still gives there message.

is there a save settings option somewhere?

Yes, in SEB 2.0.3 you have to switch to the Config File tab and explicitly save the configuration file. If you haven't opened another .seb file before, the default directory is the one where you should save the file with the suggested file name SebClientSettings.seb. Afterwards if you start SafeExamBrowser.exe, it will use that configuration.

Please see the manual for options how to configure your clients. There are several possible ways, depending if you want configure SEB for the local machine or the current user (using the directory Programdata\SafeExamBrowser\ instead of Appdata\Roaming\SafeExamBrowser). Also if using students' machines/BYOD you can use .seb files for configuring those clients.
