When using Safe exam browser in windows the program occasionally freezes which requires a force restart of the computer when the ctrl, alt, del menu is disabled. When the computer restarts the user account in windows becomes corrupted and the shutdown option in the start menu is no longer visible outside of SEB and the ctrl, alt, del, menu disappears for a user not using SEB

Discussion

  • PLEASE ALLWAYS INDICATE WHICH VERSION OF SEB YOU ARE USING ON WHICH WINDOWS VERSION, OTHERWISE WE CANNOT ANALYZE THE BUG REPORT

In which situation does Safe Exam Browser freeze? When loading some specific web pages? Are there plugins like the Flash Player on that pages which cause SEB to freeze? Since SEB 1.9.x plugins like Flash are not working properly, we are working on a fix for that (there is a thread about it in the forum).

When you have to force restart the computer, then the ctrl-alt-del menu (Windows Security Screen) will be disabled after the restart, this is no corruption, but normal, because when you force quit SEB by restarting the computer, then SEB cannot reset the Registry settings for the ctrl-alt-del menu what it does when it is quit properly.

With SEB 1.9.1 installed you should be able to get back the normal Windows Security Screen when you start SEB once and quit it normally.

For more details read the corresponding section (Configuration Files, below "ForceWindowsService") in the manual: http://www.safeexambrowser.org/windows/win_usermanual_en.html

    Hi,

I have had this experience with both Windows 8.1 and SEB 2.01 and SEB 1.9. I had to perform a system restore to uncorrupt the power scheme

  • No, you wouldn't had to do a system restore, in SEB 2.x there is a helper tool to restore registry settings for shutdown, task manager etc (functions also placed in the Windows Security Screen invoked by ctrl-alt-del).

Read the manual for more details: http://www.safeexambrowser.org/windows/win_usermanual_en.html#RegistryPane

For SEB 1.9.x there is a batch script for reseting these settings, which is a bit complicated to use properly, if you're still using SEB 1.9.1 (which we don't recommend!) you can find information how to use this batch script in the manual for 1.9.1 and in the forum.

In the upcoming version SEB 2.1 reliability of reseting these options when SEB quits has been improved and in the unlikely case resetting fails, a reboot of the machine will fix the problem.
