when i tried to configure screem on my slackware
system, it fails with the message

checking for xmlNewDoc in -lxml... (cached) no
configure: error: Could not link sample xml program
    bash-2.04#

i do have the libxml package installed.. what might be
    the problem?

i'm not too sure about installing libxml-devel because there
is no ready slackware package... i've tried the rpm2tgz
version and failing.. plus, i'm confused with what libxml
and libxml2 are... what are the specific files needed and
what kind of configuration do i need to set to ensure that
    gnome-config knows about libxml-devel?

libxml2 is a newer version which the developer prefers
    people to use,
however as Gnome doesn't use this yet screem doesn't either.

Installing libxml-devel in the same prefix as gnome should
    be all that is
needed, gnome-config should pick it up.

A simple solution may be to build libxml from source rather
    than using
binary packages as then there is no separate development
    package.
