Regular expressions do not support multi-byte characters. I
    won't be working on this.

While regular expressions are not properly supported for multi-byte characters, this particular problem is fixed before 3.4.0. Uncertain about which version fixed the problem but partial characters will no longer be selected. For the example bot 1. and 1.. will full select the middle character pair.
