It seems crafty must either miss the "xboard" command sent by Scid (that is always the first command Scid sends to any engine; maybe having a slow startup because of the contents of the crafty startup file is the cause), or Crafty somehow forgets xboard mode was on. But I cannot reproduce this behavior. The easiest fix is to just change the Scid source code so it always sends the "xboard" command immediately before "force" if the engine is crafty, just to make sure it is in xboard mode.
