The PARAMTYPE attribute is not required by RETURNVALUE:

However, not including TYPE or PARAMTYPE in RETURNVALUE (or its child) causes both a null pointer exception (DOM parser) and a "Contained element x has unknown type!" exception (SAX parser). Instead, assume a string if no types are specified anywhere.
