Now that Froyd has released Chipz (and thanks to his earlier Archive
library), there now appears to a viable pure-lisp method to unzip and
untar files. Does anybody here have plans to integrate these into
asdf-install and thus free it from the dependency on an external tar
program? This would be a very nice thing for the Windows port, and
nice from a purity standpoint for everyone else.
If nobody else wants to, I'd be glad to do the heavy lifting on this,
but before I start I'd like to know the accepted sbcl way to bundle
in two non-trivial libraries like chipz and archive for use.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't asdf-install itself require an
external tar program? (I never managed to get asdf-install to work on
Windows because it complained that I had to have Cygwin installed to
use its tar utility. If you know how to make it work please tell me.)

There are plans -- or at least visions <smile> -- to include this
support in the portable ASDF-Install library. This has diverged a good
deal from the SBCL native version. My time is pretty full so I'd very
much welcome any contributions you could make.
Check http://common-lisp.net/project/asdf-install/ for more details.
