I read the patch, and I didn't find anything extremely objectionable
about it, so I've merged it (with a few annoying textual substitutions
for consistency) in sbcl-0.8.6.20.
Do you think you could provide some automated tests for the new
functionality, so that we can track regressions? Just simple tests of
pretty-printing and the like on simple-streams would be good for a
