According to the Saxon 7.2 docs, JDK 1.4 is now required, primarily for
regular expression support.
I was wondering if other options (perhaps a third party regexp package such
as Apache Jakarta Regexp) had been considered to keep it working with JDK
1.2/1.3? Or do alternatives all suffer from one drawback or another?
I ask because 1.4 is sufficiently new that even server environments may take
some time to migrate to it. It was ruled out in favour of 1.3 by our
hosting folks! 1.4 may not be available for some OSs or be far newer than
it is for, say, Windows or Linux.
Or, are the final versions of the new w3c xslt/xpath specs sufficiently far
off that 1.4 or later will be ubiquitous by then anyway!?
p.s. Mike, are you planning/working on a reference for the new specs? I
find the Wrox book invaluable.

Not Jakarta Regexp, though. It can't pass even a minimal regression suite,
and appears not to be actively supported. The Apache ORO package is quite

in other regular expression classes, perhaps supplying ORO as the default.

Right. Many server environments are still on JDK 1.2. Of course, similiar
sentiments might delay the introduction of Saxon 7.x, but that's usually the
decision of the application group, whereas the choice of a JDK is often the
decision of an infastructure group.
