Dear list,

Thank you for your replies. I take it from your replies that the answer to my original question is no, that there is no extension function implemented in Saxon 9.4 HE to check for the existence of a file or directory on the file system. I will look into the alternative solutions you suggested.

List the directory to a text file,
parse (to XML) and analyse it and use the information from that.
