setup.py wants my mouse?

I tried running setup.py install on my server, and it exited with:

import: unable to grab mouse `': Resource temporarily unavailable @ error/xwindow.c/XSelectWindow/9012.
./setup.py: line 7: syntax error near unexpected token `"%d.%d"'
    ./setup.py: line 7: `if float("%d.%d" % sys.version_info[:2]) < 2.4:'

I ran it again, and it froze my local machine. After 5 minutes, I finally had to kill ssh remotely from another computer to unfreeze my computer.
I ran it from a Windows computer over PuTTY, and got:

    import: unable to open X server `' @ error/import.c/ImportImageCommand/362.
    import: unable to open X server `' @ error/import.c/ImportImageCommand/362.
    import: unable to open X server `' @ error/import.c/ImportImageCommand/362.
./setup.py: line 7: syntax error near unexpected token `"%d.%d"'
    ./setup.py: line 7: `if float("%d.%d" % sys.version_info[:2]) < 2.4:'

Why does the setup script even want anything to do with my X server? Is there a way to just run it in text-only mode?
