I love RssOwl for the search and filter options, which make it unique. I downloaded it a few days ago and have spent 2 days feeding it with newsfeed sources. But then I suddenly got a shock when I realised the following SERIOUS problems:
1.One of my news folders shows it has 12931 news (99% of which are unread, since everything is pretty newly installed etc.). But when I create a "saved search", it shows that there are only 9300 news or so. WHY IS THAT?? Where are the other 3600 news??? The same problems occurs when I use the start parameter -vmargs -DnoFolderLimit in order to see not just 500 news in any folder, but all the news in a folder. So instead of just 500 news, I see 9300, BUT NOT 12931. The same problem appears with other fodlers as well. One other folder has 776 news, but only displays 305 news, no mater what??
Please tell me why the news number displayed behind the folder name in brackets is different than the actual number of news.
I also did "reindex" by adding the start parameters -vmargs -Drssowl.reindex=true -Xmx1024m
BUT it did not help. So either the number of news displayed behind the folder name is wrong (either too low and sometimes too high), or the program eats away masses of important information!
2.The maximum number of news that are kept by the program is only 1000 per feed. How can I archive my news, since I want to create a database on various topics and will need to search for specific words or topics in my old news.
I do not want to switch to another program and I do not think there is another program with that powerful search features available... :-) Look forward to your answers. Thank you.
Can you run "Tools" | "Cleanup" with the "Recommended operations" checked and restart?
As for the number of news to keep, this can be set to be unlimited. Go to Tools | Preferences | Feeds | Clean Up and uncheck the "Maximum number of news to keep".
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I had done the cleanup with the recommended operations several times, but it did not help. This means, there are still 3600 news missing or so...However, I think the number behind the folder is correct, since I tested another folder and went feed by feed and added up the numbers of news behind each feed's name, and the total number of news equalled the number behind the folder name. So there must be some problem with the news aggregation or search function?????
As for the number of news to keep: I read in this forum that several users had already asked you this question and there seems to be a problem with this limit. Users write and you also wrote somewhere in this forum that when you uncheck the limit, the programme will automatically set the limit to 200!
And on your homepage you write the following (http://www.rssowl.org/help):
"[...]RSSOwl allows you to download and unlimited number of news from any feed even if the news is old enough to no longer be part of the feed. Simply configure the number of news to keep per feed (Properties | Clean Up | Maximum number of news to keep) to a high value (up to 1000)".
So can you please confirm that when I leave it unchecked, the limit will not be 200 but truly UNLIMITED like e.g. 10000000000000000 ?
Also: when I set the limit to e.g. 1000, all my feeds only give me news from the day I added the feed to RSSOWl and newer news, but no older news! For example, I added Feed XYZ on 24 May, so I do not get any news prior to that 24 May in 95% of all my feeds, and only get news from 24 May, 25 may, 26 May and so on and so on...!
Also, I read several other help posts in this forum and also realised myself that cleanup wizard in the tool-->options menu does not clean up news older than let's say half a year when I select 6 months...news even from 2011 still appear!
Furthermore, here are some suggestions for improvement that might be great:
1. when I create a saved search and set a notifier to notify me of new news in my saved search, the notifier does not show the actual news headline, but only displays the saved search name...
2. It would be amazing if it were possible to set a check in order not to display 100% matching headlines / duplicates in my saved searches and/or news folders and/or feeds.
Thanks in advance for your help.
BY THE WAY (important for understanding the original question with the 3600 news missing when searching for something!): I created saved searches searching for stuff like a,e,o,i,u or simply pressing the SPACE key on my keyboard...so since every headline and article or text in the world has SPACES in between words, the search should display ALL my 12931 news and not only 9300, since I cannot imagine that 3600 news headlines contain no spaces (ThisIsTheNewsHeadlineImportantInformation.......???). So how does this difference come about?
That does not work. RSSOwl ignores some short words (I think up to 3 characters plus some very common words). Spaces and other special characters should be ignored too.
Hi, Thank you for your reply. But how can I make it not ignore common words?
By the way as I wrote above, in my initial post, I also started RSSOWL with the start parameter -vmargs -DdisableStopWords and according to the help page of RSSOWL, this should mae RSSOWL also display common words...but it does not work!?? So any thoughts/comments on that? Thanks in advance.
By the way: I realised that there is some issue with the search function with regard to searching for full sentences. For example, if I search all my news for e.g. "best vacation deals", it will display news that will ONLY CONTAIN the three words, BUT NOT the actual sentence and wording...so I can end up getting news about best vacation of some blogger who then talks about his newest laptop deal or supermarket food deal or whatever...
And it does not matter whether I type "best vacation deals" or 'best vacation deals' or only best vacation deals without " or '.... so this is a bug....
Please fix it or tell me how I can look for specific sentences..I also tried out the start parameters -vmargs -DdisableStopWords but it did not help (no difference)!
