I suspect this patch is probably only useful to me, but I've been using
it for several years, so I figured I should probably send it to the list
at some point.
I find it easier to visually scan text in a single column, so when this
option's turned on and details are being shown, it makes the autosizer
restrict the width of filer windows to one column. When details are
turned off (which, for me, is ususally when I'm looking at a directory
of pictures as thumbnails) it gives the normal automatic width
Why don't I just always use the list view? Well:
- I'm generally happy with just the sizes, rather than all the details.
- I've got into the habit of dragging boxes to select multiple files;
the icon view provides a convenient gap between the filenames and
details where you can start dragging, whereas nearly anywhere you
click on the list view selects a file.
- The list view is rather slow to scroll. This is GtkTreeView's fault
rather than ROX-Filer's -- it's equally clunky in other applications,
and the icon view's nice and responsive.
Thanks very much,
