This is an extension of the original patch i posted which now includes custom strftime formatting for the lines and tooltips. Custom strftime strings were available at one time but replaced with preformatted strings. Was it an executive descision not to include both? -- Lucas Hazel <lu...@di...> ================================================= "Clothes make the man. It does make the options box rather big and scary-looking. Can we simplify it at all? Some thoughts: - Do we need separate colours for each line? (having different fonts is a good idea, though, since you often want the time large and bold) - 'Set Time' should have its own section, not under Applet. - Instead of a separate 'Tooltip' option, it could be another choice on the tooltip menu ("No tooltip"). - Likewise, we could remove the one/two line mode setting and have 'No second line' as an option on the second line menu. The strftime method is confusing to most people, I think (you'll need a better tooltip if nothing else). Perhaps something like: - A pre-set list, much like the current options, e.g.: - TIME - DATE - TIME and DATE - DAY of week etc - Options for some of these. E.g. - 12/24-hour TIME - DATE format (YYYY-MM-DD, MM/DD/YY, etc) - Full names for days and months These could have their own section, and would affect the window display too. Thoughts? -- Dr Thomas Leonard http://rox.sourceforge.net GPG: 9242 9807 C985 3C07 44A6 8B9A AE07 8280 59A5 3CC1 |

I like having separate colours. I guess the easiest way to make the options dialog would be to break down the options into smaller sections. Removing the Clock type options and using some logic in the drop down boxes is a good idea I think. > The strftime method is confusing to most people, I think (you'll need > a better tooltip if nothing else). If we add a disable option on the comboboxes, what about adding the strftime format option and possibly even an execute opition that will run a command and put the output into the label? -- Lucas Hazel <lu...@di...> |

Some thoughts: I broke the options box into smaller sections. Hopefully now it isn't so big or scary looking. > - Do we need separate colours for each line? (having different fonts > is a good idea, though, since you often want the time large and bold) I kept the colours in. Personally I don't see the problem with have different colours (I quite like it myself). > - 'Set Time' should have its own section, not under Applet. I've removed the need for the clock type options. Both lines and the tooltip can now be disabled in the combo boxes. > The strftime method is confusing to most people, I think (you'll need > a better tooltip if nothing else). Rather than examples can't we just suggest they read the man page? -- Lucas Hazel <lu...@di...> |

I'm still thinking about the 'custom' and 'execute' options, though. I do want more flexibility; for example, I'd like to have the format: Line1: 9:00am Line2: Sat 18th Tooltip: 2006-11-18 9:00:00 GMT Perhaps if the custom box only appeared once 'custom' was selected from the menu? I really don't think the execute option is a good idea. Why would you want to launch a program once every second? Sounds like an easy way to make the computer grind to a halt if you're not careful!
