Since upgrade to newer version of Rox Filer, I have got some very strange mini icon, something like @ appearing on the upper left corner of EVERY icon in rox filer, independently of the theme. What is this and how it can be removed? It is annoying and has no apparent use. See attached image.

I'm guessing this is the 'has extended attributes' indicator.

Temporary fix: edit ROX-Filer/images/rox-xattr.png and make it transparent.

I propose we remove this completely. With SELinux or file typing in use *every* file has extended attributes, so the indicator is pointless.

    Any objections? (Stephen?)

I turned off extended attributes and nothing changed. I have restarted Rox desktop and the mini icon disappeared.

Further I think the change shall be reflected immediately after disabling extended attributed and not after restarting the whole desktop.

One thing I noticed, in my home folder, there is tmp with sticky bit with ugo+rwx attributes and ONLY for this folder there was no strange (extended attributes) icon. I don't understand quite the concept, but I don't see the reason why that one folder was not marked. I have not touched extended attributes, except for one file where I keep appended passwords.

This mini icon is annoying and can be removed. Extended attributes are visible in the "Set Type.." menu item, that is enough for recognition.

Today I see, my extended attributes are off, I did not change since the previous advice, and there is still the small icon in upper left corner!!

    That is very strange.

Further thing I noticed, even for directories I can "Set Type...", and I don't understand why it should be possible to offer option to user to change type of file "directory" into "text/plain" or similar.

Although I have turned off extended attributes option, I have this icon now appearing everywhere again. Not just on some parts of files, now everywhere, except on the ~/tmp directory.

So far it seems that appearance of this icon is listening to some other instructions, not to the option "Extended Attributes".

I find the indicator useful which is why I added it. It should probably be separate from the general extended attribute support as turning it off because you don't like the indicator also disables the set type facility and the reading of type information from the xattrs.

However turning the extended attribute view on or off only affected the display when each directory was refreshed. Revision 4904 should fix this.

Types can only be set on regular files. Setting a type on a directory really means recursively setting the type of its contents. I've added a few messages to make this more clear, and remove the inode/* types from the list of MIME types.

Did you also understand that icon appears regardless if I set Ext. attributes in rox options or not? Chronology:

    - after upgrade to Etch I have seen the icon
    - it was on all files and directories except ~/tmp which was strange
    - I had Linux file system extended attribute on one file only, which is other kind of attribute.
    - I found out here it is about extended attributes
    - I have turned off extended attributes in rox
    - icon remained in place until the restart of rox
    - icon disappeared on most of files.
    - the icon came back on about 50% of files on different partitions
    - I have not change extended attributes option.
    - icon was after same time on every file again
    - I found out my partitions were mounted with user_xattr, but it was always this way
    - because it is annoying I have transparented the icon to not see it anymore.
    - the problem remained.

I think the icon is not necessary. I understand that icon could appear on files WHICH HAVE extended attributes set. But the icon is appearing on each and every file (except ~/tmp drwxrwxrwt) also WITHOUT extended attributes option. Maybe it is due to my mounting options, I don't know. But having icon or not, what is the difference when 99,99% files show the same icon. Than simple folder icon is enough.
