OK, I went and had a play with this, and I can report success except for the
bit using "sudo /etc/init.d/timidity restart" to get it going. In my case, I
don't use TiMidity, so I don't run it as a quasi daemon, and I have all of
that intentionally disabled.
What I did instead was run manually from the command line. I've got JACK
running, so I directed audio through JACK with:
timidity -iA -Oj
It looks like in a non-JACK setup you'd use -Os instead.
timidity -iA -Os
You might try running from the command line (if the quasi daemon version is
running, stop it with /etc/init.d/timidity stop first) and see if that
improves your success any.
I did run into problems using this soundfont with TiMidity in that it seemed
very prone to drop notes and make noxious digital noises. I'm in full blown
development mode at the moment though, and made no attempt to clean up
running processes to improve performance.
